I'm giving a 1 star review, in order to raise the attention of the customers on the strategy that the restaurant uses to make its customers to spend a lot of money they are not intended to spend. This strategy is surely KEY in the business of this restaurant. There are some entrée that are triggers to this strategy, such as the ceviche, or the fish soup. Basically when you ask theese entrée, the waiter will "suggest" you to have, as main course, a grilled fish which is the second half of the same fish used for the entrée, so, you know, it marries perfectly with the entrée. This sounds like a really good idea! The entrée costs only 12€, and the mains are around 20€. Unfortunately the suggested grilled fish is the most expensive item of the menu: 70€. Note: we, as customers, could have asked how much would it be. But what makes me angry is that the waiter surely takes advantage of the fact that the customer is shy to ask for the price, and purposely suggests the most expensive dish of the menú. I think that in this particular case he should advice about the price. It is not his duty, but it would be more honest. Said in other words: I felt pushed to buy something i wouldn't have bought if I knew the price of.
The table in front of us had the same issue at the same time: they didn't even understood what the waiter pushed them to buy, and when the grilled fish arrived, they just made notice that they didn't ask for it. Unfortunately the trick was done already, and they had to pay for it. Moreover: the waiter will casually suggest sides, or sauces/ small appetizers: keep in mind that nothing is included, and they all have high prizes for their value.
I asked for the squid, and the waiter suggested me to buy the fish. I said that i preferred the squid, and he kept insisting saying that the squid was not fresh but frozen, and the fish was better. Of course, the squid costed 19€, and the grilled fish he was trying to push me 70€.. The squid was not good, he was right about that.
In the end, we spent 140€ for 2 people. Without wine.
If you go, be aware of all of this,...
Read moreLooking other reviews we must've been a tad unlucky on the evening we stumbled across Avocado... I'll keep it brief - and all this is caveated with the knowledge that this restaurant is in a prime tourist hot spot so one might expect to pay a premium. This is an expensive place to dine - we paid €110 for two of us and shared one starter, two mains, 3 beers, and some bread and some water.... A bottle of still will set you back €6.50 (anyone happy paying that has more money than sense). We waited around 40 minutes for our bread to arrive - when we reminded the waiter we had yet to see it he brought it out straight away (it had clearly been forgotten - not the end of the world but we were hungry). Our mains were brought out around 5 minutes later followed by our starter. Not the sequence we had been expecting. Food was ok - the tomato fritters were the highlight. They were delicious. At the price point we felt a let down by the mains. In summary I think I was compelled to write this review due to the sheer expense of the meal compared to our pretty...
Read morePerfect restaurant option for Coeliacs in Santorini From my first contact with the staff at Avocado my stress level reduced - I was in capable hands and could relax and enjoy a Gluten Free meal. The wait staff and kitchen staff are friendly and knowledgeable and experienced in preparing meals for Coeliacs. I handed the waiter my Coeliac information card which he read carefully. I was then referred to Kostas who became my waiter. He then guided me through the menu to ensure I had sufficient options. Questions were responded to professionally and a great choice of meals were available. I went with a trio of dips starter with Gluten Free bread which was a perfect blend of flavours - very tasty indeed. For main course I went with the Grilled Squid which was cooked to perfection. Both were beautifully cooked and fully flavoursome and paired with a delicious Merlot. The wine list contained an extensive range of local and international options. I went local and was not disappointed. The perfect stop for a Coeliac seeking a stress-free and delicious...
