I had a blast at Sundowners many years ago, and talked it up to my wife, who I brought here for our honeymoon this week. Sadly, our experience at sunset yesterday (April 6, 2023) was truly absurd and we won’t be going back. We sat down at the (mostly empty) bar, got our own menus, and sat…and waited…and waited…and waited. In 15 minutes, not one of the 3 bartenders (or 2 + 1 barback) even looked at us or acknowledged our existence. I’ve never seen anything like it, especially at a bar that small. Even if a bartender is busy, a simple “i’ll be right with you” or even “hey guys, one sec!” lets the customer know you see them. Instead, they just kept chatting (and reserving) the other 4 patrons on the other sides of the bar. The older lady even walked past us 5 or 6 times. Not once did she even look at us. It was like we were invisible. So. Fvcking. Rude. Finally, after 15 minutes, we said, “well, fvck it”, gathered our things, and walked away. Still not a word or eye contact. Truly such a bizarre experience. If they don’t want our money, we are happy to oblige. Fvck Sundowners! We went to Ipanema’s instead, where the staff was so friendly, and the food was amazing. The owner came and sat with us, and the GM gave us a tour of the bakery upstairs where they make everything fresh in-house every morning. A complete 180 from Sundowners. Go there instead!
EDIT: See owner’s response to get a better understanding why the staff suuucks and their attitudes are terrible. No, we are not associated with Ipanema or any other business on Roatan. Also, we were sitting AT THE BAR, not a...
Read moreMy boyfriend lived here for 3 years 10 years ago and when we moved here to live he said "I have to take you to the "Canadian Embassy" referring to Sundowners! Being that I am Canadian I love having a bar that plays hockey games, but they offer American football baseball etc as well The bar has the best view of the sunset and how wonderfully to drink drinks that ARENT OVER PRICED while watching the beautiful Roatan sky The staff here are exceptional, they get really busy but are attentive don't leave you dry and get to know what you like. I was a bartender for 24 years in downtown Toronto and always learned my guests names and preferences and they do the same. Andrean ( not sure if spelling is correct) has offered me so much information on the island recommending where to get hair and nails done even how to transfer money easily from Canada basically she is super cool and always willing to go above and beyond. Ron and Lesley were super busy when I met them but still made conversation and gave personal service learning my name and making me feel at home. Also West End can get expensive but the prices here are very fair and as a tourist you aren't getting ripped off like you do at some of the other bars. Canadian owned I feel a sense of honesty here that is much different from some establishments no guilt for spending at the end of the night. Did I mention the food? It's "off the hook" as the kids say. All in all a great experience. I am living here permanently and look forward to bring all our guests to...
Read moreCame here for lunch and drinks. When I asked for my bill, I was given a sticky note with a price written on it. When I asked my server for an itemized bill, he brought me over to the bar where I spoke to a very rude bartender who accused me of being too drunk to remember my tab. Neither of them could explain the many scribbles they had written on a piece of paper that was supposedly my accurate receipt. I ended up paying $30 less than what was originally presented to me because even they were confused over some of the charges they had written down. The older lady behind the bar was extremely rude and kept referring to me as “buddy”, when I was simply trying to reason with them by asking what the prices of the different drinks were. Really bad service and poor professionalism. She should consider a different field of work because hospitality is not her working trait. If you’re coming here, please ask for what you have been charged for. During this whole process, another guest had come up to me and told me how she was also overcharged in the past. Seems to be a recurring issue at this establishment. As a...
