Budai 3 — Restaurant in Budapest

I have been coming here for many years for specialty coffee and pastries when I was in the area. Products and coffee are good. Service is not. Today I had a really bad experience with that, so I give a 1 star review till this is corrected.

The cafe officially closes at 18:00. I arrived 24 minutes before that time (17:36) to take away a few cups of coffee. I was told that it's not possible as they already started to clean the machines and that's usual. It's not. I think this is not acceptable from a place that sells coffee primarily to advertise it's opening time till 6pm yet stops selling coffee 30 minutes before that. I have not experienced this in any other places in Budapest that sells specialty coffee as their primary profile so I do not think this is normal.

Please either keep selling coffee till the advertised opening time or modify your opening times to the effective one (in this case, 17:30). If this is done, then I will update my review score. If you want zero-star Eastern European service, this is your place. We ordered a brunch from the menu which had included a bun, and then I asked if we could get another bun as well, and were told yes. Then we waited 20 minutes, the filter coffee itself by the way took like 10-15 minutes so don't order that if you crave for coffee and they won't tell you it takes that long. After 20 min, we had to ask ourselves and apparently then they say "Oh we don't have buns on Sunday". Then I tell them maybe they should say that when I even explicitly order something, and then they get offended because I apparently corrected them. They even had the balls to take payment for 2.5€ flat white after this wait and misunderstanding which was solely caused by them. They tried to give some examples that this is not proper behaviour but this feels like you hit an Achilles heal and then they get offended. Wow, absolutely awful service and even worse handling of the situation, shows zero judgement. Outstanding! If you’ve read any of my other reviews you know how much I enjoy breakfast at any time of the day accompanied by good coffee. When you add outstanding breads and pastries to the mix it’s a match made in heaven.

Budai 3 delivers on all counts. The coffee drinks are finely crafted and outstanding in flavor. I ordered a flat white that was one of the smoothest I’ve had in a while. The ham and cheese omelet was accompanied by a small salad and a crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside kifli that made for a perfect midday breakfast.

The interior is cozy and homely but seating is limited. The service is friendly and makes you want to come back...
