Menu Review: Mutton Seekh Kebab: Tender, succulent mutton minced to perfection and infused with a blend of aromatic spices, grilled to smoky perfection in the tandoor. Each bite is a burst of flavor, a testament to the culinary expertise of Karim's chefs. Chicken Jahangiri: Juicy pieces of chicken simmered in a rich, velvety gravy infused with a medley of spices, creating a dish fit for royalty. Served with buttery naan or fragrant rice, it's a symphony of flavors that leaves you craving more. Mutton Rogan Josh: A true Mughlai classic, this dish features tender pieces of mutton cooked in a robust gravy redolent with Kashmiri spices, creating a dish that is as comforting as it is indulgent. Shahi Tukda: A decadent dessert that is the perfect finale to any meal at Karim's. Crispy fried bread soaked in fragrant sugar syrup and topped with creamy rabri, it's a sweet indulgence that leaves a lasting impression.

In conclusion, Karim Restaurant is more than just a dining destination; it's a culinary institution, a living testament to the rich tapestry of flavors that define Indian cuisine. Karim’s is the iconic restaurant in Delhi that has been serving food to the common man since 1913 with its origin going back to the Mughal Era .

Karim’s is a historic restaurant located near Jama Masjid in Old delhi.

In the mid 19th century, Mohammed Aziz was a cook in the royal court of Mughal Emperor at the Red Fort, but he left when the emperor was dethroned. However, Haji Karimuddin, one of Aziz’s son, moved back to Delhi with the aim of opening a dhaba to cater to the people coming to the capital from all over India (sometimes even from Pakistan). Haji Karimuddin started the dhaba by selling just two dishes that include alu gosht (mutton with potatoes) and daal served with Rumali roti.

It was in 1913 that Haji Karimuddin established the Karim Hotel in Gali Kababian, near Jama Masjid in Delhi and soon his restaurant earned the name and fame by serving the delicious Royal food to the common man.

What’s In It?

Currently, Karim’s is a well-established hotel along with a restaurant that has customers coming from all over India to try the food. Highly recommended dishes here are their kebabs, tandoori bhara, mutton korma, mutton stew, chicken Mughlai and chicken Jahangiri.

We tried almost all the dishes and we have to give a special shout-out to the seekh kebab that literally falls apart (it’s that soft!). It tastes as good as we expected it to and the hype is absolutely justified. The curries are equally delicious and you won’t be disappointed if you eat a little more than your stomach can take (trust us, it’s worth it).

The success of this hotel has another reason that a very few people know. The owner Zain Saab takes care of all the aspects of the kitchen himself. From recipes to the tasting, he is vigilant to offer the same taste and food quality that Karim’s promised all those years ago. Zain Saab’s intent is to always provide his customers with the same care and love that Karim’s was built on.

“We’ve not made any changes in this place because when the older generations revisit, they immediately understand that this is the original taste.

They even have a Nayaab Brain Curry, if you are in the mood to experiment.

Pay a visit to this restaurant if you want a taste of the royal Mughlai food and if you want to experience the Old Delhi charm with majestic views of the Jama Masjid.

Please visit and enjoy your food.

My recent visit to Karim’s, one of the most talked-about restaurants in Old Delhi, was honestly not as impressive as I had imagined. I had heard so many people describe it as “iconic” and “the best place for Mughlai food” that my expectations were quite high. Unfortunately, the overall experience turned out to be overhyped, and I left feeling that the place did not live up to its reputation.

The first thing that struck me was the poor condition of the entrance. The lane leading to the restaurant was narrow, crowded, and unhygienic. There was a strong foul smell, and to make it worse, the gutter near the entrance was overflowing. For a restaurant with such a famous name, I expected at least basic cleanliness and proper maintenance. Getting through that area to reach the door already left a bad impression before I had even tasted the food.

Inside the restaurant, the ambience was very average. The space was cramped and didn’t feel particularly clean or well-kept. It was crowded, which is usually a good sign for a popular place, but in this case, it felt more chaotic than lively. I had hoped that the food would make up for these issues, and to be fair, the food was okay—not bad, but nothing extraordinary either. I tried some of their signature Mughlai dishes, which were well-cooked but lacked that rich, flavourful touch that I had been expecting. The taste was decent, but it wasn’t something that would make me want to return.

What really disappointed me was the price. The food is overpriced considering the quality and overall experience. There are several smaller restaurants in Delhi where I’ve had equally good or even better Mughlai food at a much lower price. For a place that has such a big name, I expected both better quality and better service.

Speaking of service, some of the staff members were polite and helpful, but the waiter who served us was quite rude. He seemed impatient and irritated when we asked questions about the menu. That kind of attitude really affects the mood of the entire experience, especially when you’re paying premium prices.

In the end, my visit to Karim’s was quite underwhelming. While the food itself wasn’t bad, everything else — from the dirty entrance to the average ambience, high prices, and rude service — overshadowed it. I can understand why people want to visit it once, because of its name and history, but personally, I don’t think it’s worth the hype. If you want good Mughlai food in Delhi, there are many better and more comfortable...

A Taste of History, But a Shadow of its Former Glory: Karim's Delhi Karim's, a name synonymous with authentic Mughlai cuisine in Delhi, holds a legendary status. Our recent visit offered a mixed experience, a blend of nostalgia and a slight sense of disappointment. We indulged in their famed Mutton Nalli Nihari, the Mutton Kheema, accompanied by Tandoori Roti and Rumali Roti, and also sampled their Chicken Biryani. The service was undeniably quick, a testament to their years of operation and efficient system. However, the food, while carrying the essence of Mughlai flavors, unfortunately did not quite live up to the lofty expectations built over time. The richness and depth that one often associates with Karim's seemed somewhat muted. While the dishes were palatable, they lacked the punch and distinctive taste that many long-time patrons remember and crave. Despite this, I would still recommend foodies to experience Karim's at least once. It remains an institution, offering a glimpse into the heart of authentic Mughlai cooking. The historical significance and the sheer legacy of the restaurant are compelling reasons to visit. It's a chance to taste flavors that have been passed down through generations, even if the current rendition might not be at its absolute peak. However, be prepared for a major headache when it comes to parking. Located in the most congested area of Old Delhi, navigating the narrow lanes and finding a parking spot is a significant challenge. It's advisable to either use public transport or be prepared for a considerable walk after parking some distance away. In conclusion, Karim's offers a taste of history and a chance to experience authentic Mughlai food. While the recent culinary experience didn't fully recapture the magic of the past, the restaurant's legacy and the unique flavors still warrant a visit. Just be forewarned about the parking situation – it's an integral part of the Old Delhi experience!
