My friend who lives in Kolkata had this on her list so we decided to make a reservation(Swiggy Dineout) for dinner on a Sunday. You have to go to the "Ticket Counter" that's across the street to have your reservation verified. They hand you a small piece of paper that you need to hand over to the lift operator and another piece of paper to be handed over once you reach the restaurant up top.
They inform you that the food comes from downstairs so it takes half an hour to arrive.
The menu has a mix of North Indian, Bengali and Chinese dishes. We ordered, Mushroom Salt & Pepper - It was deep fried cornstarch in the customary Indo-Chinese concoction. Didn't get any flavour or inkling of mushroom in those small deep fried pebbles.
Honey Chilli Potato - Would have been enjoyable if it hadn't arrived at room temperature.
Chilli Garlic Veg Noodles - This was good, but couldn't taste any garlic.
Veg Manchurian(Gravy) - Was ok
Chilli Guava Mocktail - Meh...
Mango Cooler Mocktail - Frooti with Soda
The portions are huge, good for 4 people. They took almost 10 minutes to heat up the Honey Chilli potato even after the microwave was supposedly there up top and it didn't have to be sent down.
Go here if you want to enjoy the view and maybe order an ice cream. The glass isn't clean all around so hope you get a table with a decent view because this place is all and only about the view.
The staff were friendly, polite...
Read moreThe restaurant is set atop the Biswa Bangla Gate and we have a 360° view of Newtown Kolkata while dining. The seats needs to be booked in advance and then they would issue token for entry. We visited the restaurant on a weekend hence had to wait for 35 mins before we could get the token. There are lifts for accessing. The restaurant is well furnished and decorated with paintings. The view around is a addon advantage. We went upstairs for a ala carte lunch and ordered our food. Now we had to wait for another 45 mins for our food to arrive after we ordered. We ordered chili basil chicken fried rice, kum pao chicken and chilli garlic fish. The fried rice tasted good. There was ample chicken and veggies mixed in the flavoured rice. The quantity was questionable as we ordered for 3 portions but we were served in 2 bowls and were told that one contained 2 portions of rice and the other one. So can't comment on the actual portion that they serve. The chicken and the fish dishes had 8 pieces in each. The kum pao chicken tasted same as the chilli chicken. The fish tasted good but was a little over cooked and salted. Over all I was not satisfied with the food but the atmosphere inside and around can mesmerize you. The staff behaviour was good and they were courteous enough but the standing time if possible must be looked into by...
Read moreEvery time I pass through Newtown, the sight of the Biswa Bangla Gate — that iconic hanging restaurant — catches my eye from the driver’s seat. I finally got the chance to visit it a couple of times, and it truly lives up to the intrigue it creates from the outside.
The restaurant is fantastic — a one-of-a-kind experience in Kolkata. I booked my entry tickets easily via Booking.com, which made the process smooth and hassle-free. Due to security and time management, visitors are allowed to stay inside the restaurant for a maximum of 40 minutes, which is reasonable given the limited space and high demand.
The highlight, of course, is the breathtaking 360-degree view of Newtown from above. Whether you visit during the day or in the evening when the city lights up, the panoramic view from the glass walls is absolutely worth it.
As for the food — the prices are reasonable, especially considering the location and experience. While the menu isn’t vast, it covers enough to enjoy a pleasant meal with a view.
If you're in Kolkata or planning a visit to Newtown, Biswa Bangla Gate is a must-see attraction — both for the unique architecture and the memorable...
