Oh boy, where to start.
So we visited this cafe 2 days after Dashami. Google showed the cafe opening time at 12 noon. We reached the door at 1 PM and found them closed. We walked off to wait nearby. After 20 minutes, we called them on the number listed on Google. Since it was post-Puja period, we asked them specifically whether they were offering everything on their regular menu. They said yes. They confirmed that their services were not limited to the Puja special menu.
When we reached the cafe, we wanted to sit indoors downstairs. The waiter insisted we sit upstairs. The cafe was completely empty except for two other patrons. The lights were off. A generic playlist was droning on in the background. We chalked it off to post-Puja fatigue. Serving in the hospitality industry cannot be fun in Kolkata around this time of the year.
But the waiter should offer us water, shouldn't he? Either regular or bottled water would have been fine. Whatever we tried to order, we were told that it was not available. "We may manage to serve one plate of pork chops," the server said. We were alarmed to hear it as the cafe had just opened and it would mean that the meat was at least from the day before. We settled for baked fish and grilled fish (because the other items that we wanted to eat were not available).
Service was extremely slow. How long does it take to bake fish? Not nearly an hour, for sure. Particularly when it is accompanied only by two dry pieces of garlic bread. No mashed potatoes or vegetables on the side. The food was not spoilt but definitely stale. The grilled fish was too salty and both the fish crumbled when we tried to cut them with our knives. The lemon ginger iced tea was bitter, probably because of the bruised lemon slice at the bottom of the glass. It tasted synthetic. We got charged extra for ordering Irish flavour and we didn't even taste the normal tea, forget anything special. We were too disappointed to order dessert.
The current 4.3 rating that this cafe has on Google seems too generous. The Zomato rating of 3.2 seems more apt perhaps on their good days. Today was not one of those days.
I should rate them 1 star but I'm giving an additional star as they could be suffering from post-rush season blues.
I'm not willing to go to this cafe...
