A blink-and-you-miss-it place, but entirely at your own risk, for, believe me, folks, this rather low-key, unpretentious joint whips up, by a long rope, what indisputably ranks as the best misal (I have deliberately refrained from the -pav suffix, the reason for which will unfold itself in this review), at least in Greater Mumbai, this side of Sion. Its closest contenders are in Chembur (Bhatt Vishranti Gruha) and Thane (Mamletdar Misal), though not necessarily in that order. Coming back to Hindu Vishranti Griha, the cheerful and nationalistic name must have been inspired from pre-independence times, as the joint professes to be several decades old. But getting down to brass tacks, though the rather demure and moderately seated restaurant serves delicious fare, including a delightful version of American sevpuri, its raison d'├кtre and USP is MISAL, with a simply out-of-the-world flavour which never fails to tickle the most bland palates, even on multiple occasions. The very first time you dunk the piece of fresh, soft, bread or, alternatively, of pola, a typically Maharashtrian, or as some claim it to be, a Konkani version of the ubiquitous dosa/uthappa,, you would guaranteedly be transported to food heaven! The perfect foil to breakfast, brunch, or even lunch (for the latter, the accompaniments may exponentially increase), HVG's misal can be had at any time of the day, or I daresay, even, night. Oh! And before I forget, they have Jain and 'No-onion-no-garlic' versions too, which, unlike in other places, are, if anything, as yummy as the staple misal, if not better. The proprietors (brothers, I believe, please correct me if I am wrong) are pretty friendly blokes, going out of their way to make their clientele comfortable. So, get geared up, folks, and if you happen to be in the Nana Chowk area of Mumbai, please do not forget to visit this heavenly abode for misal. Au...
┬а┬а┬аRead moreHindu Vishranti Gruha -the breakfast knocked my slippers off!! An honest small eatery nestled right in the heart of the city, at Grant Road ,Mumbai. The place welcomes you with a humongous painting of goodness standing on demons, embodying triumph of good over evil. At the onset,I was unsure about the taste and variety, but was soon blown over by the freshness and quality of food. We tried their Pola( rice and flour crepe), which was perfectly cooked crisp but not smothered in oil, like at most places. Their dosa were truly delectable, uniquely lathered with an aromatic red chutney without making the dosa soft or limp.My favorite was their upma which was absolutely mouth melting and beautiful adorned with fresh cut cilantro and green . More on the menu was promising and the appetite was certainly whetted! This place is definitely for food lovers and will never tantalize. With delicious flavours still lingering in the mouth and heart, more to relish in my next...
