Let's just say this is one of those dusty places in Pondy I used to go to because it is empty most of the time, but now I know why it's empty. I had reserved 2 days ahead, a table for 10 for 11am (not meal time). They mentioned that lunch would only begin at 12 and they can't offer it at 11am. I said I wouldn't need lunch and if they have a tea menu - we would order from that. They confirmed that they would be able to cater to the same and confirmed my reservation. The night before my reservation I stopped by for a quick dinner and told them that if possible, I may need an extra chair for one more person for the reservation next day. They said they they don't offer anything at 11am, are unwilling to host and were very rude and unapologetic. They cancelled the reservation and did not inform me. They then asked if I can pay them extra money for the bigger group and said they can offer a private space if I give them the money. I was very surprised because usually restaurants are happy to take a bigger group (more orders I am guessing?) and I was very clear I don't need a private space. Very disappointed with the...
Read moreThe ambiance at this place left a lot to be desired, however the reality of our meal was anything but desirable.
Our meal (crevettes à la créole, poisson grillé, et steak de bœuf) was a ridiculous attempt at French cuisine, not only because the flavour profile was off, but also because the fish was reheated, the creole was cooked with curry leaves, and the mashed potatoes served with the first and last dish wasn’t fresh made (re: sticky hard mess).
Atop this, the waiter, Mani was arrogant, ignorant and argumentative. He tried to argue that there were versions of Creole although the menu indicated just one, after which he crossed his arms, laughed and told us we should just order something else of the menu instead of telling him our grievances.
Truly a bizarre experience, je ne recommanderais pas de retourner à la Maison Francis.
Definitely not going back here, and would recommend that anyone going by the positive Zomato rating that this place isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Read moreOur first night at Puducherry and as a lifestyle travel enthusiast and food lover - my first time at this beautiful city - no better way to start exploring this heritage place. Dinner and hospitality by Stalin made us feel at home!
Food you need to try - their coconut rice and the tiger prawns - french gourmet speciality. Carrot and coriander soup was Excellent. Just ask Stalin and he will take care of everything else.
( Don't miss their chocolate mousse and vegan Pista icecream )
So much culture and old school design had me so satisfied. They have lovely rooms which are 200+ years classically designed.
The warmth of the staff is something you shouldn't miss experiencing!
Monday night done right - at this restaurant. Chez Francis. Don't miss out on the history of this place - it's all there to absorb and take in.
The l'orient hotel will always have my heart. Until next time.
Thank you so much...
