The Cascade — Restaurant in Tamil Nadu

A fabulous meal at the popular family favourite The Cascade Chinese Restaurant in Khadar Nawaz Khan Road, Chennai.

I have been visiting since 2001 when they were located at the basement of Eldorado Building in MG road / Nungambakkam high road, later they moved slightly ahead to Khadar Nawaz Khan. We almost always order their crab soup, volcano chicken, drums of heaven, and prawn tempura.

On a recent visit after several years, I went ahead with my most favourite menu item from 2001, the Crab Soup. It is a simple thick soup with crab meat and a egg drop, and the portion is huge to share between 3-4 people. This time however the crab meat wasn’t very fresh, which made it less enjoyable.

The prawn pepper salt was deliciously done, with a strong pepper punch with a good heat over fresh prawns.

We ordered the dim sum basket, trying here the first time, and loved it, the chicken were more flavoursome than the prawn dimsums, which had a mild ginger punch. A great value for money basket, that came with 8 pieces of four chicken & four prawns.

Daughter saw crispy corn on the menu and wanted it, probably a good decision, it was superbly crispy with mild chilli, highly recommended.

We ordered the Phuket fish, which after the first piece tasted as something that wasn’t very fresh, so we had to send it back.

This time the experience with the food did not meet our high expectations, but that cannot stop us from visiting again to try the classics and a few new favourites....

The Cascade is a long-standing and comfortable place. Predictable but the great part is that the portions are generous, the soups come in steaming hot bowls and the choice of starters is varied.

It's a place for people with healthy appetites and the occasion of the Chinese meal, adapted to Indian tastes and requirements. That's quite a tall order.

Families flood the tables and the music is the soundtrack of conversations, spoons clicking and waiters weaving through the tables bearing aloft the dishes.

It's almost always been this way, so it's like going back to a favorite read or a kitchen where you know exactly what you're going to get. No surprises. At times, that's all one looks for.

There is no fancy presentation or new fangled experimentation. And that's what people come for. They all have their favorites, whether it's chicken, crab or lobsters.

Being vegetarians, we ordered Chilli Garlic noodles, a dry concoction of babycorn and mushroom coated lightly and fried. And topped off with a tiramisu.

The Cascade seats a fairly large number of people and the family tables where anywhere from 8 to 15-16 people can easily be accommodated creates the atmosphere.

It goes back to the time when eating out was uncomplicated. Laughter, catching up on family gossip and no one was on a diet or went to the gym.

They said Kung pao Chicken is their Signature dish, and fast running,, oh yes....! the sausage in the gravy was too good and the consistency of sweet salt and spices were deliciously blended 🤗 which given a perfect match for the fried rice and noodles, believe me even kids will like this taste a lot 😋
