Review: Gudeg Sagan, Yogyakarta

One of the best gudeg spots in Yogyakarta! Located at Jl. Prof. Dr. Herman Johannes No. 53, Depok, Sleman, this place has a spacious layout and homey architecture, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The restaurant can accommodate many guests with its large tables and chairs, making it ideal for families or reunions with friends.

Unlike typical Jogja-style gudeg, which tends to be very sweet, Gudeg Sagan offers a more balanced flavor—savory, slightly salty, with just a hint of sweetness. A plate of mixed gudeg rice comes with white rice and a choice of kampung (free-range) chicken—either thigh or breast. The chicken portions are generous, tender, and flavorful.

The sambal goreng tempe and spicy krecek (cow skin stew) are packed with rich spices and taste absolutely delicious.

Service is quick and courteous, and the place is clean and well-maintained—great for casual dining or group gatherings. They also offer a variety of chips and crackers as tasty snacks on the side.

For gudeg lovers, this place is a must-visit. Gudeg Sagan truly delivers on taste and quality.

Conclusion: Highly recommended—definitely one of the best gudeg experiences...

Dan saya mikir “Well, this is not my mistake tho”. Mba kasir pun bilang “Gimana klo tunggu dulu sebentar nanti diantar, Mba? Nanti es lemon tea nya ga usah bayar.” And I caught the expression dari mba2 server yg menghela napas dan merautkan wajah seperti “complaining”.

Gudeg Sagan in Yogyakarta offers a lively and bustling atmosphere, especially during peak hours — a clear sign of its popularity among locals and tourists alike. The restaurant’s traditional Javanese ambiance and friendly service create a welcoming dining experience, even if you might have to wait a bit for a table during busy times. The food itself is enjoyable, with the gudeg offering a sweet and savory balance that many fans of Javanese cuisine will appreciate. While the taste is good, it may not be the absolute best value for money when compared to other local spots, especially given the prices are more on par with Jakarta standards. Parking can be a bit of a challenge due to the restaurant’s central location and high visitor traffic. Still, for those curious to try a well-known gudeg destination in Yogyakarta, Gudeg Sagan provides a pleasant experience worth checking off your culinary list.
