I've just discovered this new Modern American Italian joint in the middle of SCBD and am so glad that I did! The team behind Privy opened this up to cater to a more casual modern western spot for those that want amazing food without having to "dress up fancy".
We started with the garlic bread that were truly remarkable. You can't have a modern Italian-American restaurant without garlic bread. Garlic breads are simple but tough to master, and so the way you make garlic bread tells you a lot about the quality, experience, and skill of the entire team. The garlic bread served to our table was made to perfection. The balance between the crispy outer layer of the bread blended incredibly with the soft inner layers of the bread. The garlicky top was also done perfectly without overpowering everything else. Loved it 100%.
A huuuuuge favorite of mine was the Fussili A La Vodka! It was cooked to a perfect al dente, providing a nice bite and smooth density to the pasta. The sauce blanketing the dish was also one to die for. The curly texture of the fussili also complemented the dish well by allowing the sauce to seep into the small crevices of each fussili pasta. I would absolutely pick the fussili if I were asked to pick one food to eat for the rest of my life. By far the BEST dish they have in the restaurant.
A contender to the fussili was the carbonara. This too is a simple yet hard to master dish that requires experience and skill to truly master. The simplicity of the dish gives no room for error or imperfection. You truly can't go wrong with a carbonara from Jon & Lou.
Other than these two, just about everything else was very very good. The other pastas, pizzas, steaks and side dishes were made in such a way that leaves a good impression on you. Some others that also left a mark in my heart were the baked penne with meatballs, the Patrick pizza (probably because it was shaped like a star to honor Spongebob's trust friend, Patrick Star), the Chicken Parmesan, and the Mac & Cheese, and.. surprisingly, the barbeque chicken pizza (which reminds me of California Pizza Kitchen in the US!)
At the end of it all, I really loved their Tiramisu. I totally forgot to take pictures of it because I swallowed them whole a little too fast lol. But yes, don't forget to end with their Tiramisu. It certainly is a challenger to the famous Oma Elly Tiramisu.
All that to say: I would 100% recommend you all try this restaurant. It is definitely worth a try and worth coming back for.
A side note: parking in front of the restaurant currently costs 100k for non-electric vehicles so if you drive a gas-powered car and you don't want to pay the hefty fee, you'll need to find parking across the street. Another side note on this, the owner assured me that the tenants of the lot are formally requesting the landlord to remove the 100k extra parking fee for ALL customers. So be on the lookout for...
Read moreKinda felt like stepping into a melb’ restaurant. Loved the ambiance and vibe, the service was nice too and the staff were friendly and helpful.
For my meal, I had the Patrick pizza, prawn linguine, chicken francese, mushroom soup, and some fries.
I’d heard a lot of good things before coming here, so I had high expectations especially for the famous dishes. I started with the fries, and they were really good, we finished them in one sitting.
The mushroom soup was okay, a nice companion to the bread, which was chewy and pretty decent.
I personally enjoyed the patrick pizza, i love the cheese and honey combo, but none of my friends liked it, so I guess it’s not for everyone.
I was actually about to order more pasta like the lasagna and tagliatelle, but fortunately, I tried the ones we ordered first before adding more.
Unfortunately, I’d say the pastas didn’t quite live up to the hype. The chicken francese tasted average, and the noodles felt more like meesua noodles (overcooked)? As for the shrimp linguine, it actually gave me a bit of a headache — the pasta was undercooked, which threw the...
Read moreI am here to try their JDW 2024 menu, Pistachio Cannoli, and will just focus solely on this menu only.
Whenever I go on a food hunt, I try to stay mentally prepared for surprises, and this place definitely delivered one. Based on Instagram photos, I expected two pieces, but in reality, I was served just one. Not a huge deal, but it did set a rocky tone from the start.
As for the presentation, it looked fine at first glance. But then came the cannoli shell—described as “mirroring the rugged strength of tree bark.” In reality, it was a thin, fragile layer of fried wonton skin. A light tap was all it took to shatter it completely. I had hoped for a thicker, crunchier pastry.
What puzzled me even more was the flavor. After my first bite, I double-checked the menu. No mention of lemon anywhere, yet the lemon flavor from the creamy filling was overwhelmingly dominant. It took some effort to finally detect the pistachio nuttiness beneath.
All in all, it was a truly confusing experience from start to finish.
