If you are in Cork City centre make your way to the General Post Office in Oliver Plunkett Street, cross the street and head upstairs to the Hi-B Bar. It apparently got its name because of the ancient Hibernian Hotel which years ago was located here. At the top of the stairs before you enter the door on the right you know you are about to go back in time as the sign on the door states โ€œNo mobile phones allowed. Please talk to each otherโ€.

On opening the door you enter a tiny bar which is surreal - not so much a place as an experience. Full of character and craic, it is probably the friendliest pub in Cork city. Because of its size (max capacity probably 40) it is an intimate space where you can engage any and all in conversation. Songs by artists such as Luke Kelly and Christy Moore are played as backgrouind music and don't be surprised if on occassion all the customers decide to accompany the singer and burst into song with them. A step back in time, there is always a blazing fire, a cold pint of stout and story to be heard at the Hi-B. If you are only going to visit one pub in Cork the Hi-B has to be at the top of your list where you can enjoy a unique experience while having one of the best pints...

One of my favorites in Cork! We spent a day here and I tried to hit up as many places with Beamish that I could fit! We did Fri & Sat night. (Dont be a dork like me and take a pic inside...I had to get a pic though!) This very sweet older man was sitting next to me. He spoke about his younger years playing rugby and harvesting barley for Beamish. He was a pleasure to chat with. I came back the second night but was too late. He was leaving just as I arrived and the lone barwoman was overwhelmed.

Other favorites: The Raven was another quiet one, with nooks to disappear into. Thomond and Welcome Inn had the best music.

P.s. Chat with the older guys if you love Ireland. They'll tell you about a country you'll never get to witness. " I'll remember...

NO mobile fons..great...love it...Agressive shouting by bar staff at a foreign visitor texting with sound off...not impressed with. You make your own bad Karma in this world and last night you made plenty. Having a rule is one thing...how its enforced is another and how u treated a visiting tourist last night as witnessed by the entire bar was both uncalled for and actionable.I hope someone takes you on soon. What goes around ...comes around.Hospitality?...you might want to look that word up..but I have a feeling you don't care...given the arrogance and hostility you demonstrated last night. The famous Hi B Cork pub ...where hostility is their version of hospitality...Have a nice day..because you...

Absolutely loved this spot. The bartender, Juan, was not only incredibly skilled but also genuinely kind โ€” made us feel right at home. The small, intimate atmosphere added to the charm, and the barโ€™s unique no phone and โ€œpleaseโ€ policy was a refreshing touch. It encouraged real conversation and a bit of old-school courtesy you donโ€™t often see anymore. Canโ€™t recommend it enough for anyone looking for a more thoughtful, personal experience in the city. (Juan let me break the phone policy to take a photo. Not only did he say yes, but he joined us in the photo) Came alway from Alaska for this experience! Would recommend!

If you are looking for good conversation and a creamy pint of Guinness, this is your spot! I met some of the loveliest folk here. I love the sign that encourages no mobiles and conversing with others. Get back to the good ol days at this little dive bar. Cheers to Eileen, the sweetest woman I met in Ireland.
