After a very disappointing pie in Camden the weekend prior, I was determined to find a good one prior to leaving Ireland. E&E came up on a Google search of 'best pizza in Dublin' with a 4.8 rating. Since it was getting late I quickly departed my hotel and headed to Liberties with great expectations.
Having arrived at E&E after a brisk walk, I immediately noticed the change in temperature when I entered. I was glad that I was seated close to the open door. Utensils, a glass and the menu arrived quickly, but it took a while for the waitress to return. After about 10 minutes, I wound up asking one of the wait staff to send someone over to take my order. Once I ordered, both the bottle of room temperature mineral water and the Cotto e funghi pie came out quickly.
The crushed Marzano tomatoes were delicious but the mozzarella was almost non-existent and the ham was all chopped up into tiny slices. From the online pictures, I was expecting a few slices of ham that were broiled crisp in the pizza oven. What I got was a soupy mess of tomato and ham bits on a thin soggy base. The outer crust was great, but there was no way to eat this pie in slices, as the middle forced you to eat it by knife and fork.
Now I've never been to Italy, but both sets of my grandparents came right off the boat - one set from Rome and the other from Naples. If this is true Italian-style pizza, then you can keep it. I'll take a Brooklyn, Little Italy or Greenwich Village slice any day over what I got at E&E. It wasn't bad, it just couldn't compare to what I grew up with in NYC.
As for the service, the waitress never came back to my table until I waved her down for my check. If she had, I might have asked for some crushed red pepper flakes to spice up a pie whose only redeeming qualities were the tomatoes and...
Read moreOnce ordered, the food and drinks arrived quickly. We ordered the cheesy potato croquettes as a starter to share (3 croquettes). They were slightly disappointing and lacking favour. The pizzas ordered were tasty and the menu had many different interesting options. One small critique of the menu was the QR code to see pictures. The menu itself was A3 sized and could have included pictures without us being on our phones. The cutlery provided was the most frustrating part of our meal. The knives provided were blunt and not suitable for cutting pizza. This was clearly a problem as the tables beside us were also struggling to cut their pizzas. Throughout our visit, the staff seemed a little uninterested. When we arrived, the staff looked over and left us to wait for a couple minutes. At this point, the restaurant was quiet and the staff did not look very busy. We had to ask a few times for water to be brought to the table and when wanting the bill, we waited nearly 15 minutes before just going up to the till as the staff never came over. While we appreciate the restaurant was fairly busy, it was surprising the staff never came over to ask how the food was. The restaurant had also informed us (when booking online) that we only had the table for an hour. It seemed that as we left, there was no rush. We felt that this time pressure was a little unnecessary and made the experience less enjoyable. Overall, our visit was pleasant but not one we'd be...
Read moreI have been to this Pizzeria a Friday night with 3 friends (our first time) - We had amazing food and amazing time! The place is cozy, relaxing and elegant! The staff is great and very transparent in explaining the menu (in case of any doubt) and giving good suggestions without influencing.
We got a starter where the Italian crocche’ (Croquettes) were AMAZING, clearly homemade. When you eat those you can feel the taste of the parmesan and pecorino cheese - i have to admit, I don’t remember last time i had a croquette that was soo good!
I did try the mortadella pizza (half) and the calzone fritto! Both were amazing, i am not sure which i do prefer most between those ones but both were delicious. I had also no issue during the night with my stomach. The pizza, including the fried one, were quite light (considering I ate more than usual).
Coming to prices, for the dublin standard are more than fair, I would say that are not expensive at all considering the quality you get! I will go back there again for no doubt! I do highly recommend to try it (also for a romantic dinner).
Ps: shame i could not get the dessert as i was too full - next time I will...
