Il Cantuccio — Restaurant in Bologna

My spouse and I were looking for a seafood restaurant to which to invite two longtime Italian friends. There are not many in Bologna. This restaurant is around the corner from where we are staying for 3 months and the menu looked interesting. While the food was good and unusual, the service was poor. We reserved some days in advance and when we arrived we were told that our table was not ready and we would have to wait fifteen minutes. We were finally seated at another cramped table at the back of the restaurant, which was uncomfortable, and our Italian friends are elderly.. This was embarrassing for us. The staff then proceeded to ignore us for most of the dinner when we tried to get their attention at various points, while buzzing around one or two other tables exclusively. IMBARAZZANTE 2 ore e 20 per 2 portate: -Spaghettoni con vongole e bottarga (18€) Piatto composto da 5 vongole, 1 chiusa, 1 frantumata nel piatto. 40g di Pasta asciutta. -Gamberoni alla piastra (23€) 3 Gamberi piccoli, un carciofo mezzo bollito NON COMMESTIBILE. In pratica era stato cotto intero senza essere capato. Con spine e pelame… Chiedo al cameriere se è lì per errore o solo ornamentale, la risposta è stata: “UN PO’ ORNAMENTALE MA ANCHE UN PO’PER ESSERE MANGIATO” faccio notare che è una risposta insensata, il carciofo non è capato, ci sono le spine, è impossibile tenerlo in bocca. Mi ha detto: “provare a scavare dentro…” Non è uno scherzo! Sento che lo urla alla cassa e dice: “Si gliel’ho detto…” Torna al tavolo e chiede se gradisco al posto del carciofo un insalatina o un contorno, ma i gamberetti li avevo gia mangiati ed erano le 22:10 e mi ero seduto alle 20:30. Seccato mi alzo vado a pagare. La donna in cassa, in silenzio tombale, non mi ha guardato MAI IN FACCIA, forse era imbarazzata. Batte tutte le pietanze, carciofo ornamentale compreso. Senza chiedere come fosse andata, senza scusarsi, senza nemmeno proporre uno sconto, offrire un amaro, che ne so. Solo un silenzio imbarazzante. Al che non resisto ed esclamo: “Non ci chiede se è andato tutto bene?” Mi risponde: “Ehm no, ho sentito prima del carciofo, però se vuoi DIMMI” Cara signora, come promesso, le lascio la mia recensione. In primis riveda il concetto di rispetto e dignità, non le farà male. Dopodiché, in secundis, semmai, posso spiegarle come si capa un carciofo, le regole basilari dell’impiattamento, non si servono oggetti ornamentali non commestibili e non parlo del carciofo cucinato male, ma anche dei fiorellini da campo (NON COMMESTIBILI) nel piatto si mettono SOLO COSE CHE POSSONO ESSERE MANGIATE e semmai cucinate bene. We had dinner here two nights in a row. We stumbled upon this, my wife was unhappy about another restaurant that could not accommodate us. She wanted something beyond the Bolognese/pasta/ ragu and pizza offerings elsewhere..My wife is an excellent cook, she wants food she could not cook herself or is new to her. Understand that we have travelled extensively all over the world. My wife was happy. If they can make her happy it is good.

It is expensive, but worth the cost. Nice people, lovely atmosphere, and terrific seafood. We are leaving Bologna in the morning, otherwise...
