I kept the receipt to write this review.
Solo traveler here, not native Italian but I know the language (important detail). Went in to dine solo, was sat at a table by a boy - all good. Lady comes over to take my order (pizza and 1L bottle sparkling water). It’s 36 degrees out there. She asks me “is that all?” - of course it is, I’m dining alone.
Lady is interacting with every person around me but practically slapped my pizza down on the table and walks off. Pizza BURNED! The lady next to me gets her pizza (and water) and it looks lovely and so it is for every other person ordering a pizza. Strange.
Then I notice with every pizza she brings out, she asks if the would like spicy oil for the pizza or any other toppings and then she brings them… I wasn’t asked anything.
Then when it comes to paying she says you only ate a pizza and drank water. Nothing else. Babes I’m eating alone - what else can I stuff my face with?
Again, I speak Italian and she don’t know. She says to the lady next to me all this effort for a pizza and water - saying I wasted her time! The lady agrees and makes fun of me flipping the menu card and choosing a basic pizza. Lady mind your own business.
The place was practically empty with only 5 other tables filled (1 - 2 people each).
I was planning on tipping her but after the conversation I overheard I never did. So extremely...
Read moreScalinatella in Bologna is a local favorite, and it came highly recommended by the locals. From the moment I walked in, the warm and inviting atmosphere set the stage for an unforgettable dining experience.
Their Pizza was a revelation in simplicity and flavor. The crust was perfectly thin and crispy, topped with the freshest ingredients. The simple tomato sauce, melted mozzarella, and fragrant basil created a harmonious blend of flavors that danced on my palate. The anchovies were incredibly fresh, something you rarely find in the US.
The pomodoro sauce reminded me that even the simplest vegetables taste way better in other countries than the best ones available in farmers’ markets in the States. The simplicity of the pizza was its greatest strength, letting the quality of the ingredients shine through. My big thumb rule: pizza should have four or fewer items on it, apart from the dough.
Did I mention it’s cheap as hell? Just 5 Euros for a Margherita and 6 Euros for the one with anchovies!
Scalinatella is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates the art of pizza making. It’s a place where simplicity meets excellence, and every meal is a celebration of the rich culinary heritage of Italy. It truly shows why Bologna is often touted as the Food...
