We came to Bologna for the food and we "came"..... All jokes aside, our visit to La Prosciutteria Bologna was a once in a lifetime experience. Walking past this establishment during the day, we already were intrigued by the vast display of meats, cheeses and wines placed on every wall and in all the displays. If you want to experience this food and drink place properly, you will probably need at least 2 hours to spare though. We tried several times to get a table, but the line was too long and after a few drinks in the surrounding bars we finally found a spot for the 3 of us to get some supper into our system. The ordering process is quite simple, stand in line, contemplate on what food platter or assortment will satisfy your table's occupants and yourself and what drinks will fit the mood of this specific night. The line moves slowly, but steady. Now is the time to look exactly at every single piece of meat and cheese that is cut up continuously by the staff and formed into ready to eat snack and dinner plates and sandwiches. I had about 15 minutes of waiting time to rethink all my options and ordered the deluxe platter, 2 different Porchetta sandwiches and the house wine, €51 split among 3 people, fair and more than enough. A wait time of 30 minutes might sound harsh, but in fact, time flies sitting on the warm, breezy backstreets of bologna and mingling with your travel companions and passers-by. The house wine is nothing special, I am myself more of a bear guy, but I did not feel like choosing from the 20 different bottled beers, so we got ourselves 3 glasses, and we truly enjoyed the cheaper, but in my opinion perfect wine for the occasion. The arrival of our supper was highly anticipated by us hungry travelers and without a big show, the 2 sandwiches, 2 wooden boards with cheese, sausage and bacon from the region were set on the table, in combination with a paper bag full of bread. It might have been a mistake, but the first taste was the €5,50 Porchetta and truffle sando....... I was instantly catapulted into another stratosphere of being. I am not exaggerating by telling you, that I have never experienced a flavor combination that made so much sense and at the same time overloaded my synapses to a point of utter paralysis, both in mind and body. It sounds like I am not being honest and extremely overreacting, but it took me 2 days to finally be ready to write about what happened in the historic Jewish ghetto in bologna during my Italy trip 2021. The feast continued with so many different cold cuts and fatty meat tastes, it took the 3 of us almost 1 hour to finish our order. All of us were grasping for words to explain what had just robbed us of our understanding, what was even possible by eating what essentially is just a snack food. I truly believe, money can't make a person happy, but this night has shown me, good company, affordable wine and pork fat, can. Whoever plans to visit Bologna, even just for a 24h trip, take some time out of your day and get a taste of haven. If nectar and ambrosia were the only things the gods ate, I can only imagine they envy us mortals for exactly this...
Read moreWe were looking to sample some different meats/cheeses from the region so were excited to come across La Prosciutteria while walking through Bologna. They offer various charcuterie boards that they call chopping boards and the inside looked cute, casual and authentic. You order at the counter. They offer sandwiches, meat boards, cheese boards, or the combo chopping board. It's priced per person, but u get a lot on a board so would definitely buy for fewer people to start. The presentation of the board is cute. Plates r paper & utensils plastic. They offer a fill ur own filtered water, which I was excited about until I saw how gross the faucet and drain were - nope! Will pass on that. Also after we sat down we noticed the gal ringing everyone up was obviously sick and wiping her nose a lot. Unfortunately the chopping board wasn't very good and tasted like perhaps it wasn't the best quality of items. The meats were better than the cheeses. The toasts with toppings were not good. In hindsight I would probably order the mixed meats board along with the mixed cheeses board as it seems those offer better/more selection. The atmosphere is upbeat and authentic. However, we...
Read moreIf you're looking for authentic Italian food, skip La Prosciutteria in Bologna. This place is a textbook tourist trap — and judging by the suspiciously glowing reviews, either fake accounts or people who don't know anything about good food are boosting its ratings.
The bread was completely stale, and the fruit was old and lifeless. Instead of proper metal utensils, we were given flimsy wooden ones, which felt cheap and out of place.
The cold cuts were okay, but that's the bare minimum you should expect when you're in Italy. You could clearly taste that they had been sitting out in the open air too long — the surface was dry and turning grey. In a place that supposedly specializes in cured meats, that's just unacceptable.
The service was practically nonexistent. We had to order and pick up the food ourselves at the counter, yet they still added a 5€ "service charge" per person. What service, exactly? The cashier treated us like she couldn't wait to be anywhere else but there — a far cry from the warmth and hospitality Bologna is known for.
Bologna is full of incredible food — don't waste your time or money here. You can find way better just by walking a few...
