Disgrace to Indian Cuisine โ Avoid at All Costs
Our recent visit to Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant in Bolzano was one of the most disappointing dining experiences weโve ever had. As fans of Indian cuisine, we were appalled by the lack of authenticity, flavor, and basic culinary care.
The mutton biryani was a disaster โ just plain rice mixed with an orange-colored gravy and a few dry, chewy pieces of mutton. No aroma, no spices, no layering โ nothing that qualifies as actual biryani.
The chicken vindaloo was nearly identical โ just chicken dumped in the same lifeless orange sauce. It lacked every element of the traditional vindaloo: no heat, no tang, no depth of flavor.
The chicken pakoda was dry and flavorless, fried in a bland batter. Even the accompanying green chutney couldnโt rescue it.
Yes, the prices here are relatively cheap โ but thatโs no excuse to serve such horrible food. Reasonable pricing should not come at the cost of basic taste or authenticity.
Service was slow, with long wait times and indifferent staff. Based on our observation , the person serving us appeared to be Bangladeshi (though weโre not entirely sure), which may partly explain the unfamiliarity with genuine Indian culinary techniques โ the menu feels like a superficial imitation of Indian food.
If you're truly craving good Indian or Pakistani cuisine in Bolzano, avoid this place and try instead:
Jalal Restaurant (Via Renon 25) โ authentic flavors, far better quality, and good service.
Gul Restaurant (Via Milano 99) โ flavorful food with proper spice, and a much more satisfying...

We haven't had Indian food in a long while, so we were excited to eat here. The father (owner) and daughter were so welcoming. We ordered mixed pakora, veg briyani, fish curry, butter chicken, muttar paneer, garlic naan, and Chai. All so delicious! We had leftovers and we ordered chilli chicken, fish korma and rice to go. And they gave me some papadum! Now we have enough food to last us a couple of meals. We loved the atmosphere of the restaurant, the light fixtures are so beautiful. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with such warmth and gentleness by the staff, making us feel instantly welcomed. Their attentiveness and kindness throughout our meal added a personal touch that made the evening even more special.
As for the food, it was absolutely amazing! Each dish was bursting with authentic flavors, beautifully balanced, and cooked to perfection. The biryani was a standout, rich and aromatic, with just the right amount of spice. The naan was soft and buttery, the perfect accompaniment to the meal.
