While many seem to like this hotel, we can't say the experience was that enjoyable. The building feels tired, with an interior renovation done in an 80's style appearing dated. We followed the directions to the underground carpark (thankfully provided by the hotel), and discovered steps up and down to get to the hotel, and then up again to get from reception to the elevator. Hardly a deal-killer, but annoying nonetheless to schlep the luggage after a long day.||Interior decor was surprising - it was neither "classic old" nor "modern chic". Instead the reception area felt like something you might see at the counter of a Jamba Juice in a nondescript American mall. It was probably refreshing when first built, but style, particularly Italian style, has moved on significantly. ||Out of the elevator we found more stairs to get to our room. It was certainly spacious, but the style again felt dated. The bed was in a loft, up a set of noisily-creaking stairs, with a sloping roof skylight. Window coverings were good, blacking out the light of a very early sunrise, but we couldn't get the air conditioner to get the room below 22 or so (roughly 71), downstairs, and it was warmer still upstairs - all making for an uncomfortable night.||The location was good for wandering around the old part of the City, but we have to believe that there are other centrally-located hotels offering a better experience. On any future trip we would likely opt for a stay in the beautiful surrounding area, visiting the old town (which the City seems to be intent on further improving)...
Read moreHotel Greif is a charming 4-star hotel with an excellent location, just a 5-minute walk from the train station. However, do note that the road leading to the hotel is a stone-paved street, which makes pulling luggage a bit challenging. The check-in and check-out process was smooth, and we were pleasantly surprised when the reception allowed us to check in early at around 12 PM. However, we decided to leave our luggage and head out to explore the city first. The room was very spacious and beautifully designed with artistic elements. After reading the hotel’s introduction, I discovered that each room was uniquely designed by a different artist, which made our stay feel even more special. The bathtub was a great addition, adding extra comfort to our stay.Breakfast was impressive, offering a wide variety of high-quality options. A kind and attentive staff member also served hot food on demand, which enhanced the dining experience. One downside was the shared sauna, which was open to all genders and not private, so we decided not to use it. Additionally, there was only one USB port in the room, which made charging our devices a bit inconvenient, especially since we accidentally left our universal adapter at our previous hotel. Unfortunately, the hotel did not have any chargers available to borrow.Overall, our stay at Hotel Greif was very enjoyable. Despite a few minor inconveniences, the excellent location, spacious rooms, and great service made it a memorable experience. We would definitely consider returning...
Read moreThe Greif is outstanding. Rooms are equipped with a well designed wooden cabinet and desk system that runs the length of the room with a mirrored front closet next to the cabinets. For a hotel that has been here for hundreds of years it is surprisingly modern due to remodeling by Viennese architect, Boris Podrecca.
The outdoor terrace bar is cozy and there are tarps that can be dispatched to provide shade and keep the rain away. The breakfast bar is outstanding and coffee and eggs and made when ordered.
A notable design plus is that the refrigerator is cleverly placed in a matching cabinet at desk level-not inconveniently on the floor like most places. The contrasting wood floors are lovely, and the rooms are well lit from a number of sources, which you can control
The bathrooms have everything one needs with marble everywhere.
The location on Piazza Walther is a walkable distance from the Bolzano-Bozen train station. The staff is a delight and eager to help. For those with bags: there is an elevator but there are steps to negotiate to get to the elevator la ding in the lobby. Plush terry flip flop slippers and bath robes are provided. Even a room umbrella is provided for the duration of your stay.
Will I stay here again: definitely.
Should you stay here: certainly.
I will ask if I can keep...
