I am sure many people have had a great experience at this restaurant. Ma…non è stato così per me e la mia famiglia.
Our waiter, who was born and raised in Catania but whose family is from the UK, seemed offended that we began to speak with him in Italian. I have studied and spoken Italian since I was a kid…I lived in Roma… my boyfriend — who was with me — is also very, very good at speaking/reading/writing the language. But this young man just seemed…annoyed with us. We’re quiet + easy to please… Maybe he was having a bad day?
Still…the way he spoke with everyone else at the other tables was so different… I could not understand why.
Also: we live in New York…I have lived there for 16 years… my boyfriend for many years too…and the first thing this young man says to us is, ‘Well, you don’t sound like you’re from New York’…as if all New Yorkers sound like the actors in the movies.
What if we said that to him? What if we said, ‘Well, you don’t sound like you are Sicilian…’ I’m sure that would’ve gone over very well …
We asked him about himself, tried to start a conversation… all he could say is that he does not watch football — or “soccer,” as we call it. As if Americans don’t know what European football is ! 😂
Me, my boyfriend and my mom, who was also with us, did not stay to finish our meal or our wine because it was a weird vibe. (The food was ok...)
This guy was probably just young and insecure about something…I don’t know. It was disappointing, to say the least. We visit Italia because we love the language and the people…it’s our heritage…we read the Italian papers every day…we read Italian literature…we live on a New York block with many Italians who moved to the city in the last few years…they are our friends.
I hate leaving a negative review. But I wanted to write this in case it helps others when deciding what restaurant to pick out while spending time in...

Read moreAmazing family meal here, thanks to Vanessa and the team. They're rightly proud of their range of beers - we had five different ones between us, and all had their own unique flavour and weight (all of them were equally easy to drink). We tried a range of dishes from the menu - the chicken burger was voted by three kids as "best chicken burger ever"! All delicious, all very reasonably priced, and a great atmosphere for children and...
