Assaje Navigli — Restaurant in Milan

When we first passed this place I thought it was going to be a tourist trap based on the other nearby restaurants begging us to come and eat. I was very wrong. This may be hands down the BEST pizza I have ever had in my life!

The service was wonderful, the restaurant offered us free cups of Prosecco to start as well as free fried dough, fried pizza with Nutella for dessert, and Limoncello as well all included with our meal. We each paid 12 euros for everything (we got 4 pizzas 2 bottles of water and all the freebies), a fantastic value in my opinion.

The pizza had a perfect sauce to cheese ratio and incredible fluffy and delicious crust. It was cooked just right and did not have too much “flop” as I call it (when the dough is so thin the pizza flops down when you pick it up). My friends thought it was hilarious how overjoyed I was with how good the pizza was (it was so good I took a picture with our leftovers in front of the Duomo) I rate the pizza a 9.5/10, the highest rating I’ve ever given (this is a hobby I do for fun back home in America 😅)

After going to this place because of the various vegan options, we were delighted to try. We both ordered vegan pizzas. When the pizzas came, the "meat" looked too real and we confirmed it with the server. The server confirmed they were both vegan pizzas before going back to the kitchen. A few moments later, the server came back, took our pizzas and gave a half-hearted "this is the first time it’s happened". No real apology. Then when making our vegan pizza, they pulled out the meat and looked at it like it has never been touched before. After we got the bill, they charged us for everything (even the "free Prosecco" at the beginning of the meal which they snuck in the bill) and I stated that this was unacceptable as my partner has not eaten meat for 12 years and myself for 5. There was no remorse or compassion from the restaurant, they just wanted to make sure that I paid the full price and stated that "you were not charged for the meat pizza". We had a wonderful experience at this restaurant. The pizza was absolutely delicious - one of the best we’ve had in Italy. The service outside was friendly and welcoming, and we really appreciated the complimentary treat at the end of the meal.

The only downside was the manager (an older, tall man with grey hair) supervising the outdoor area. He kept correcting the waiters even though they were doing an excellent job. As guests, it felt uncomfortable to watch, and it slightly spoiled the otherwise lovely atmosphere.
