Initially, we were attracted by the great location and the overall rating. But after just 5 minutes, we learned why the place likely hadn't received a notice in the Michelin guide since 2021.
The waiter "welcomed" us with an attitude and expression on his face that made me feel like I'm being an inconvenience to what must have been a slow day without much work.
When I asked if a table was available he simply pointed at a couple of tables to his left without much further guidance, so we chose one of them.
He quickly and without many more words dropped the menus and wine list and asked "still or sparkling water" and waddled off after we said "spiralling".
At this point, I already mentioned to my partner that I didn't feel very welcome and she sensed the very same feeling.
When we received the water, he just pointed at the chair of the table next to us where i hung my coat which was wet from the rain. Again, no words. When I asked him what the problem was he just pointed at it again. When I asked if there's problem (note, I've been speaking Italian the whole time to make sure I'm not causing a language barrier), he just said "it's reserved". Clearly, this was not true, since there was neither a reserved sign nor did he care much to inform us of any reservation when we asked for a table.
When another server came to us in about 10 minutes time, we simply asked for the check and were getting ready to finish out bottle of water, which was delicious by the way.
It then took 2 minutes for the manager to come and remove our cutlery and plates from the table and asking us to leave since they're a restaurant and we couldn't stay here just for water.
When was said that we did intend to eat and order food , but changed our mind because we clearly didn't seem welcome by the attitude of the waiter, the incredibly rude way we've been treated and the lack of service we were given, the manager decided to be offended herself, telling us she never experienced this in 15 years of working with this restaurant. She was more interested in us pointing out who the waiter was, rather than addressing our problems, apologising it or trying to address the problems we raised.
The restaurant seemed eager to display their Michelin plagues from 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. You can see them right on the left side when you enter the restaurant. But after this experience and especially when I saw how the manager addressed and handled a problem, I'm not surprised that they didn't receive a plague since 2021, which might as well have been the time this manager joined the team.
I can't comment on the food, other than their pretty high prices across starters as well as mains. I cannot comment if these prices are justified.
Unless you think that service plays into cost of food, in which case they were...
Read moreYes, this is one of the most visited place in Monterosso. Yes, this is one of the highly rated restaurant. Yes, they serve amazing food, which we never tasted.
Me and my friends, group of 4 were at Monterosso for two nights. We went to Miky on day 1 and tried to reserve a table at 7:30 PM. Restaurant was busy so we reserved a table for next day at 8:30 PM, considering whole day activity we had to do.
Next day we arrive at the restaurant at 8:30 PM and asked to check for reservation we had done a day earlier. Now the conversation goes like this
I asked my wife to go and check for our table at 8:30 when me and my friends we standing outside. She got a response from manager stating we actually had reserved the table at 8:00 PM and we are late. Then the manager asked us to wait, which we did for next 15 mins. After that, I went in to check out the status inside and the has the fun thing with the manager.
Me - excuse me, we had a reservation at 8:30 in the name of A. Manager - you had a reservation at 8 and you are law. Wait for few more time while I am looking for a table. Me - I remember I had booked for a table at 8:30 and it’s almost 9:00 and we are still waiting for a table. Please check if you have anything available. Manager - Sir, people are eating here and you are shouting, it’s not right. Me - ( even though I never shouted) I am sorry if you think I am shouting, but I am just asking for a table as I had reserved for a table at 8:30 PM. Manager - ( asking me to come outside) i can’t give you a table as you are shouting and not respecting other customer. Me - ( again I never shouted or raised my voice) I am sorry if you felt so, I am just trying to get a table here, so that I can have some nice dinner. Manager - what are you trying to prove here. Me - madam, I am not trying to prove anything. I just want to have a nice dinner, nothing else. Manager - sorry, I will not give you a table. The looking at another party of 4, she gave a table to them.
This happened in front of a crowd of 10/15 people and all were looking the manager with open eyes. Even the party of 4, who took our table, said sorry to us that they are getting our table.
I have been staying at United States in Seattle for last 9 years and never had to encounter anything like this ever in my life. This experience was so bad, it just ruined our evening. The manager was so rude, for no reason, was beyond my understanding. Just be respectful to one another. As a customer I just wanted to have a nice evening, and it was ruined by a very...
Read moreWe found this place to be very overrated and probably the worst meal in Cinque Terre over four nights. I'd say at least one reason was because we spoke English so I wouldn't recommend it for English speakers that don't speak Italian.
It started when we were sat all the way in the back in a room that was pretty hot considering we had dressed up a little. We asked them to turn the AC down which they did but it didn't help much.
Then we waited 10 minutes before anyone gave us menus, and they only left 3 for the 4 of us. We had to ask for the 4th, which is a simple mistake but throughout the evening we saw many of these types of mistakes. Waiting also became a theme of the night.
We tried to order our food, but the server waived wait at us (after having ignored us for awhile) and then ran off. A little while later someone else came who apparently spoke English? She took our order and that was the last we saw of her.
From the time we sat down to the time we received our appetizers, it was 1 hour. The lady also must have misunderstood because we received one wrong appetizer. They said they would fix it...but it took them another half an hour to do so. 1.5 hours in and we had 2 appetizers?
The entrees came around a half hour later and I was hoping all the waiting would be worth it but it really wasn't. My swordfish was very mediocre with little taste, my wife's pesto pasta was good but nothing better than we could make at home (we aren't even good cooks), my sister's seafood plate was good but not amazing. My father in law got the tuna and while it was very interesting, it wasn't too mind blowing. Chocolate and tuna sounds interesting but it really just didn't mix.
The other little mistakes were them not replacing silverware they took, forgetting to deliver a second bottle of wine we ordered until we reminded them, and delivering the seafood utensils at the END of the meal after my sister broke most things open on her own.
The big finale at the end of the meal was a 225 Euro check for an unremarkable dinner that took 2.5 hours to have. At this level I'd expect good food and excellent service. The service was extremely slow and the food perfectly middle of the road.
The next night we went to La Taverna up the road and paid 65 euros, had very good (but basic food), and were very easily out in about 80 minutes. They all spoke English a little but more importantly really TRIED to speak it and just be hospitable. It was great service and great food and we had a much better night there...
