Excellent seafood restaurant, good service, wonderful experience
N40°49.700' E14°14.914' on the island of Castle Nuovo, this restaurant is known for its seafood dishes. Carnivores should not be disappointed: they also have a good meat menu in English. Dinner starts around 7.30pm and the restaurant fills up quickly. The restaurant has an outside terrace on the square and a second one on the waterside. In April 2019, we made a reservation to sit inside in a beautiful interior overlooking the water and close to the lobster tank.
In April 2019, we ordered Caprese salad (€12) and seafood soup (€16) as starters. The latter is not really soup but a small portion of boiled mussels. The Caprese salad with mozzarella and excellent olive oil was delicious. Such a simple dish offering so much taste. Amazing.
The first main course was fried fish (cod, mullets, sole, anchovies, squids, red prawns, wheat flour, salt, pepper) €18. Fried like Japanese tempura, it was delicious. To supplement the little portion of salad, the eggplant lasagne was a good side dish. The other main course was the tuna Sasà (tuna sesame) with simple strawberries salad (€22). The quality of the tuna was equal to tuna served in Japan. Fresh, delicate and full of flavour. Instead of the soya sauce, the sesame oil was a surprise. The salad with small strawberries was excellent. We enjoyed the local white Lacrima Christi del Vesuvio Mastrobernardono (€30)
With a line of guests waiting for a table, the best thing about the service was not rushing our dinner. There was no pressure from the waiters at all. After finishing dessert, the waiter asked if we would like coffee or something else. We stayed and enjoyed the music of the guitarist and the singing of the guests. For foreign visitors, a wonderful experience.
La Scialuppa offers a culinary experience with excellent food, great service and music in beautiful surroundings. Although not cheap, it is worth the price. Very...
Read moreThe food was great and I understand that this is predominantly a seafood restaurant, but in my party of 3 (as it turned out on the spot) the other 2 were not fund of seafood and they were struggling with their choices... But the real issue was the service. OK, I have to give it to them we did show up without a reservation, but they seated us without a problem, but then when the place started to get full (as I could tell mostly with locals as it was pre-season on a Tuesday night and besides us everyone was speaking Italian around us), they start to give us some looks and made us feel as our presence was a major inconvenience to them, even though we did not stay long, with ordering, waiting for the food and eating we took less than an hour and left a good amount of money there... I don't know whether the cold attitude they showed us was towards us not having a reservation or being foreigners (some of the staff did not speak English), but what is the point of seating a party an then treat them badly? If you are expecting guest who did make a reservation then to do not seat us, it's...
Read moreWe've been there for dinner and the location at the water is nice and it feels more exclusive/ptivate, while still being quite central. The food was good, but the prices where too high for the quality and the location doesn't make up for it.
Our initial waiter was friendly, while a bit reserved. His successor was absolutely ignoring us. In the end, from asking for the bill (repedeatly) to getting it, it was more than 40 minutes. We wanted to pay in cash cash together, which should be a waiters wet dream. However, the person paying lacked an additional twenty Euro bill, he wanted to give. Another person chipped in a fifty and another one a twenty, without recognizing each other added money. The waiter just grabbed the whole pile of money and claimed the fifty to be his own. We were too nice to make a fuzz out of it. In the end, he stole 50 Euros from us, despite already getting a generous tip of 40 Euros for a really bad service. Ruined...
