I visited Italy (Nov-Dec/23) for an academic conference and a gastronomic adventure. Since I was in the Emilia Reggiano region, what would the latter be without a trip to Parma?!?!
After visiting the Pilotta Museum, I ventured to the first of two restaurants recommended by my hotel staff - Osteria del Teatro. Unfortunately (and subsequently fortunately), they were full and could not seat me. So, I ventured on to Ristorante La Greppia ... and I'm glad I did.
To sample authentic Parma food, I had a plate of Prosciutto and a board of Parmesan cheese chunks with aged balsamic vinegar from Modena. The plate of Parma Ham looked copious and might feed two. But, it was so fine and yummy and not overly salty that I was able to consume it solo. The Parmesan cheese was not as brittle as I get in Canada. It was softer and easier to eat in a form other than grated. And the restaurant had used a high quality aged balsamic for dipping. Combine this with vino rosso and the overall effect was delectable. I highly recommend this combination. The only thing I was not keen on was the bread. It is boring, white stuff with no particular taste and a dry texture. Yet, it seems to be characteristic of the region. If I return to Parma, I will have this meal at La...
Read moreI was very dissapointed at their attitudes. Tha man was supposed to take me to the table but he just pointed at the table and didn't even look at me but walked away without even saying anything. I had to wait long to order because they ignored me so I had to call the waiter. other man that looked like an owner literally threw the bread basket on my table and walked away and I could not enjoy any moment of it. and when I finished, that man took my plates, throwing the cutlery on the plates with making noisy sound. I wouldn't wanna believe this is what every Italians are like and I don't experience ever again in this restaurant which they should be ashamed of. I was even surprised that some people had good experience with this restaurant. Maybe they discriminate against people by looking at their apperance. They choose to be rude and I really would like to ask if that's the attitudes that someone professional in their area should have. They can't be...
Read moreVery hard to leave a score for this.
We arrived late and could find a table only outdoors in a day that was not too warm and there was some rain.
We probably didn't order the right thing for my taste. I personally found the "culaccia" to have a flavor too delicate. The "gnocco fritto" was less tasty than the one we had 2 days before.
The wine was super and the dessert quite gratifying.
Had we ordered a more traditional dinner I am fairly comfortable I would have enjoyed it much more as I could see other interesting plates around me.
We probably got unlucky also with the service. The staff was not too warm and I felt like we ended up in the "tourist corner". When I stepped into the indoor area to visit the restroom I could breathe a completely different atmosphere and the same staff talked to me with a much warmer tone of voice.
Probably an unlucky night. I would give it another chance should I be...
