I am very glad I found this hole-in-the-wall after my visit to the Vatican. If I am ever back in Rome, I hope to come again.
Mario comes from a long line of restauranteurs, and he has been in the business for many years. He started cooking gluten-free 20+ years ago for the benefit of a family member.
He opened this restaurant, which is entirely gluten-free, in October 2024. He told me that he sleeps better at night knowing that his celiac customers have no chance of encountering contamination caused by his restaurant, because there is only one kitchen, and it is fully gluten-free (not two kitchens which cooks might been to move between).
The food was delicious, the atmosphere friendly, the conversation with Mario very enjoyable, and the prices excellent.
I had the meat lasagna (€10), a toasted prosciutto and fontina sandwich - basically a fancy grilled cheese (€3), two 500ml sparkling waters (€1 each), gelato with house-made orange sauce (€4), and Twinings Earl Grey tea (there is a selection) (€1.5). Total €20.5. All great food! There were many things I wanted to try, but I went with lasagna because I hadn't had good lasagna in a long time. It hit the spot.
If you want to talk about your day at the Vatican Museums, Mario might be interested to discuss highlights. He seems very passionate about art (but not in a way that he would force it on you). He shared some interesting insights.
Thanks for a great meal and conversation during my solo visit, Mario!
P.S. I'm selecting the €10-20 range for this restaurant because I came in thirsty and my first water doesn't count. Most people probably won't have two food items, three beverages, and dessert, and, depending on alcohol preferences I am not considering, can easily get a great meal and come...
Read moreThis place is absolutely amazing! When we arrived, the owner opened the door for us because we thought it was locked. He was having some trouble with his card reader. We took a look at the menu and had enough cash so went ahead and ordered. It is off the Main Street so you do need to go looking for it!
In talking with him, he’s been cooking gluten free for 25 years due to sensitivity and his daughter is celiac. He was friendly and also let us know he can make food not on the menu like if you wanted carbonara etc. Just too much to write out. So you can ask him to make what you’d like!
I had the lasagna with spinach and ham and my husband had the veal pizzaola and both were transcendent! My gluten eating husband was content. The meat fell apart snd the sauce was amazing. My meal was also phenomenal. I just kept saying “oh my god, yum!”
The bread with the meal was good too and it also had some rice cakes with it.
Dessert was good too. Husband had a crepe and was able to choose which gelato. The crepe was a smidge chewy but flavor was great! I had the tiramisu and it was very good. I barely tasted the coffee but I don’t have a lot of tiramisu to compare it to.
The meal was very reasonably priced. We each had a soda/ sparkling water. Everything total was 34 Euro!
As an American visiting Italy, I was so thrilled to be able to experience traditional Italian food in...
Read moreThis restaurant was so wonderful I ate there twice in my 4 days in Rome! My mom and I both agree that it was the best Italian food we had while in Italy, and she's not someone who normally eats gluten-free. It was so awesome to have access to a restaurant that only makes gluten-free food, and that is actually so tasty. All the dishes we tried (mixed salad, eggplant parmesan, tiramisu, Nutella and banana crepe, caprese salad, pasta carbonara, and ham and cheese crepe) were amazing! The owner, Mario, has a pretty extensive menu of meals he makes fresh (unless he runs out of something) and some things that are off menu that he will make. If there's some Italian meal you want to try that isn't on the menu, he may be able to accommodate it (as he did for us with pasta carbonara that was so delicious). The one thing I will mention about this restaurant is that it does take a while for the food to come out, but it's because is a small local business and because everything is made fresh; I promise it's worth the wait. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant as our meals here were a special part of our trip. Mario is so kind, and speaks Italian (of course), English, and Spanish. We hope to make it back to Italy sometime and will absolutely come back to...
