+JMJ...Every visit to Rome between 2000 and 2009, I scheduled to tour the Vatican Necropolis (aka The Scavi) because the conclusion of the tour, stopping to gaze upon THE burial place of St Peter, the sometimes impertinent, incredulous, outspoken yet, loyal, dedicated lead Apostle of Jesus Christ, was always incredibly moving and awe inspiring. I have taken the tour with a priest and other times with the guide, Magdalen (I think her name is) and all were very informative about the history of Vatican Hill, the cemetery in place years before St Peter's martyrdom and burial, the customs of families whose deceased were bury therein, and were, of course, very respectful fulfilling their duty as guide in a sacred place. I always made arrangements on my own prior to travelling to Rome. There are two things that I wish they would allow: 1) Photography; 2) Taking a moment to read from one of two of his Epistles. For example: 2 Peter 1:1-7. Of course, guide books are available and any committed Christian will probably prayerfully prepare themself before paying this visit. You better believe, I would suggest this tour to anyone, believers and...
Read moreThe story behind the finding of the Necropolis - an ancient city cemetery is remarkable. I strongly recommend reading, The fisherman’s tomb by John O’Neill before going through the excavation site, which includes like tomb of Saint Peter. The tour guide was informative, helpful, and carried a guide to assist us visitors in understanding the sites that we saw. Absolutely mind blowing to see the bones of Saint Peter. Tickets are not easy to get. Email the Scavi Excavation office 6 to 9 months prior to your Rome trip. They are that hard to come by, often times called “the hottest ticket to have in Rome”. The tour itself took an hour and a half and no Photography is allowed once in the necropolis. Upon exiting the necropolis you a visitor also can walk through the grotto of Saint Peter’s, which is the floor that contains the tombs of deceased popes. You can also get into the Basilica. It was a treat to have the ability to skip the lines that form outside of Saint peter’s for entry into the Basilica. Going through the Scavi was an absolutely humbling and wonderful tour, and the highlight of our...
Read moreThis really is the most spectacular tour. Yes its hard to get into, so as soon as you know you're going to Rome, book this. Its just incredible. Im Catholic and was travelling with my athiest friend. The tour was led by a very knowledgeable guide and with us where a family from Ohio a couple from Ireland and two Catholic priests on pilgrimage one from Texas and one from Australia and every single person was in awe the whole time. It was moving and exciting and sad and incredible all at the same time. I really cannot recommend this tour enough. There are parts of the walking around that can get a bit difficult and tight so obviously if thats an issue for you then this may not be ideal. But aside from getting a bit warm this was...
