Sottosopra Trastevere — Restaurant in Rome

This place had the potential to be a good time, but ended up being a bad experience for us.

Pros: we were greeted by someone by the outdoor menu right away, the restaurant was trendy and restrooms were clean, and outside terrace was (for the most part) peaceful. The menu has a clear number system to identify potential allergens. Server was very nice when present.

Cons: Minutes after being told about the daily special we were told that they were out of it. It was only about 5pm, so that seemed dreadfully early for the kitchen to be out when the restaurant was not busy. There were also a lot of mosquitos in the terrace. I was bit at least three times while reading the menu, so we requested to move inside. (Not the restaurants’ fault, but beware!) When we noticed mosquitos flying around inside as well, we decided to just have drinks instead of a full meal. After we received our drinks, our server sat down in the room next to us to have a meal of her own. I understand that servers need breaks and need to eat, but unfortunately no one checked on us after that. I would have ordered another drink if someone had checked in on us. Since no one was nearby, my husband had to approach the server while she was eating and ask for the check, which was uncomfortable and made us feel rude.

All in all I can see the potential, but our personal experience...

I had the pleasure of dining at Sottosopra restaurant and the experience was absolutely fantastic. The location is welcoming and original, with an atmosphere that combines modernity and warmth, perfect for an intimate evening or a meeting with friends. The menu is varied, with dishes that express creativity and very fresh ingredients. I tried the off-menu truffle dish and was pleasantly surprised by the perfect balance of flavors and the presentation taken care of down to the smallest details. Even the vegetarian/vegan options were well thought out and tasty. The service was impeccable: the staff was kind, professional and always available to explain the dishes with passion. An excellent wine list completes the offer, with several carefully selected labels. Ultimately, Sottosopra is a restaurant that manages to combine quality, innovation and excellent service. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a special dinner in an elegant setting but without ever being too formal. I can't...

A genuinely delightful experience.

After arriving (without realizing) at the end of the month, we realized that Rome was somewhat more chaotic than usual, and as a result we experienced tired, cold service all weekend.

Until we met Dennis.

We came here by accident, and Dennis took fantastic care of us. Not only that, he actually spoke to us (the first server over four days). He was friendly, inquisitive and knew his products (from the amount of different olives that were used in their olive oil, to the preperation and process of their steak tartare).

He spoke to us as humans, and actually made us feel welcome which was something we hadn't experienced beforehand. We felt welcome, looked after and respected as customers.

I will be returning to this place now every time I go to Rome, and this evening has now become one of our best memories of rome, frankly due to the service Dennis provided.
