Ended up at Al Barattolo after my first two dinner options were either closed or fully booked. I arrived as a solo diner around 8 PM and there was still a crowd waiting to be seated. I was told the wait would be 10–20 minutes, and luckily, I got a table in 10.
I ordered the spaghetti with mussels and clams, along with a glass of Merlot. Unfortunately, I was initially served a glass of white wine by a different server, who seemed confused when I pointed it out. Thankfully, the original server corrected it quickly.
The pasta itself was just okay. I came in really hungry—usually that makes anything taste better—but the mussels didn’t seem fresh, and the overall flavor was underwhelming.
The restaurant also felt understaffed. I waited a while for black pepper, then eventually just grabbed it myself from the server station. The family next to me did the same with olive oil and vinegar after unsuccessfully trying to get a server’s attention.
I had planned to get dessert, but after the long wait and mediocre food, I decided to skip it. A €2.50 coperto charge was also added to the bill.
Overall, not the best experience. No...
Read morei was really excited to come to Trieste because i’ve heard such good things. But todays experience ruined it all for me…when we arrived at this restaurant they didnt even notice us so we just sat down and waited. We didnt had to wait for a long time to get the menu in the meanest way they literally threw it on the table in front of us and the waitress was rude. We ate pasta and pizza wich we taught Italy was known for but it was a complete disappiontment. Before Trieste we were in Slovenia and its such a shame that i have to write this down but in Slovenia both the pasta and pizza were better. I mean are we really at this point? That we have to say that Italy should learn from Slovenia?😂 Dont get me wrong it wasnt tasteless or bad at all we just expected better than what we got. There were also a lot of bugs thats not really their problem but they’ve atleast could have placed some candles or something to keep them away. The seats were also grease like literally oil and stuff. And the worst part is we found a sting in the pasta wich we didnt end up paying for that was nice of them. Afterall...
Read moreWe visited Al Barattolo because of its supposedly excellent Neapolitan-style pizza. The restaurant is nicely located in the center of Trieste and is large. The many tables were full by 7:30 p.m. The staff is friendly and quick. That deserves 5 stars. However, the food was rather average. Admittedly, the pizza was good. We chose one with seafood. The dough was really super thin on the inside and thick and fluffy on the outside. That's how it's supposed to be. We were disappointed by the Trieste-style cold cuts platter as a starter. It was rather bland and uninspiring. The bread served with it (supposedly homemade) was also only average. We were very disappointed that no Italian olive oil was served at the table, but instead an extra virgin olive oil made with EU olives. In general, these oils are cheaper but not appropriate for a restaurant like this. The olive oil was also unimpressive. The prices are on the high side for Trieste for a pizzeria. Overall, just under 4 stars. Not a...
