If you've ever dreamt of a dinner in a small Italian village on the shores of lake Cuomo, where the faint smell of garlic and wine float through the crisp fresh air, and the sound of forks, plates, quiet whispers of patrons, and cries of seagulls create a symphony playing to an amphitheatre of villas while the sun melts into the snow capped Alps with a burst of color, reminding itself it was still as beautiful as the town it watched over. Sailboats gently bob up and down with the gentle breeze, gentle guardians protecting the moment, as you stare longingly into your partner's eyes, both of you understanding that the only thing in the world more special than this place, at this time, is the love you share, at least for you.
If this describes a similar dream you've had, you should give this place a shot.Even if you haven't really.
The only downside is that Caffe Varenna will make all the restaurants in your hometown seem like mud huts serving you hot plates of dog$&@+ and charging you for the privilege of choking it down while the waiter keeps interrupting your conversation to fill up your...
Read moreI should’ve listened to the reviews! Don’t make the same mistake we did and honestly just give it a miss… Location is beautiful and the service was great, very friendly men. However, it was a red flag when I asked if I could get the carbonara without bacon (I know difficult sometimes to change menu items but I’m very relaxed with a back up veggie option on the menu if it’s an issue), the man said they can’t change any menu items because they are pre made? Hmm… our fault for not seeing this as a red flag. Pre made food lake front in varenna? Shouldn’t be the case. I think for the price go literally anywhere else. If you’re just wanting a drink, perfect location with great wine. But the food was so crap, literally tasted like nothing :( I got the tortellini in sage and butter sauce - quite literally tasted blander and worse than store bought :( and my partners carbonara didn’t taste like anything, and it came out steaming hot as if it had come out of a microwave. Disappointing for...
Read moreWhile staying in Bellagio, we took the ferry over to Varenna. After walking around and touring the town, we stopped here for lunch. It has beautiful views of Lake Como. It was cloudy the day we went, the pictures could have been much better on a sunny day. Most of the tables are outside and it looks like they had two or three inside. It was a short wait about 10 minutes. The staff was very friendly and spoke both English and Italian. No coperto here.
The food was very good. I had the penne with tomato sauce, basil, and almond. It was whole wheat pasta but I honestly couldn't taste the difference. The sauce is very good with only the slight hint of almond. Never had that with my pasta before, it was a nice complement. I tried a little of my wife's pappardelle with mushroom. It was very creamy and not overloaded with mushrooms. Between the food, service, and beautiful views this was a great choice. I would definitely...
