Very helpful staff and delicious food. I was recommended this place by a local. I got the Dangojiru set - a very hearty soup with a thick noodle served with tempura onigiri and some tsukemono (pickles) - and Toriten 10pc, served with lemon and shoyu based sauce. The toriten was very juicy and tender, though I noted the batter was not very crispy. Maybe that is the way it is meant to be. I highly recommend the dangojiru and if you have a big stomach like me you can also get the toriten hehe.

My partner is vegetarian and we were able to get veggie tempura for her and a soba dumpling served with daikon and green onion. Both were delicious, and my partner recommends the veggie tempura. Do note that the tempura is served with a sauce that may have dashi in it, which often contains katsuobushi/fish. To be safe, my partner used the tableside soy sauce instead.

Finally, I do not believe there was an english menu and I don't know if the staff speak English. They were very forgiving of my bad Japanese skills, and I think without dietary restrictions it will be easy to order off of the tablet device which...

I recently had the pleasure of dining here, and it was a truly authentic Japanese experience! From the moment I stepped in, I was delighted with the beautifully designed interior and serene atmosphere. The traditional decor, complete with tatami mats, created a warm and inviting ambiance.

The menu offered a wide array of authentic Japanese dishes, and everything we tried was absolutely delicious. The Tempura and Dangojiru were incredibly fresh, and tasted rich. The highlight for me was the exquisite presentation and quality of the dishes– it was evident that the chefs take great pride in their work.

The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, providing excellent service and helpful recommendations. They made us feel welcome and ensured our dining experience was top-notch.

Overall, Amamichaya is a hidden gem for anyone seeking genuine Japanese cuisine and a memorable dining experience. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to return!

Payment can be done via cash, credit card or cashless payments. (You’re not allowed to pay the total separately!)

I love this place! Their dangojiru is my favorite and I either get it in a set or on its own - the pickles on the side are so crunchy! The flavor and ingredients hit a core memory of home cooked food and the dish fills you up both literally and figuratively. It’s mandatory for me (having a sweet tooth) to pick from their long list of classic and seasonal handmade sweets to close out my meal. I had their sakura-manju the other day, and it was lovely (gotta love their mochi to anko ratio). My partner also loves their toriten because it deliciously comes with kabosu or lemon and yuzu-koshō (yuzu chili paste) go mix into the ponzu. I’m always bringing friends here and recommending it to others ~ lunch is always busy here but the wait isn’t too bad (they’re very efficient) as there are places to sit inside and outside, and looking at the menu makes it go faster. Felt like the deliciousness has decreased since I came here 4 years ago. Ordered the same thing that was my absolute favorite in Beppu, deep fried rice cheese balls but this time they were surprisingly oily. The deep fried Tofu sadly wasn't the soft type that melts in your mouth but rather chewy. Another sad thing is that they deliver all dishes at once so they will get cold, especially deep fried stuff should be served one at a time, so that you can enjoy it hot, once they get cold they are hard to swallow. Thank goodness the sour sauce helped to combat the heavy feel. The staffs are polite and if you really want to eat here, come early like 5pm as it gets crowded fast, at 6 almost full and you have to get on the waiting list. The place is actually a Tea shop but was always coming here for the cheese balls, probably not anymore. It is rather far from Beppu station.
