Ootoya is a traditional Japanese "set-meal" restaurant chain that is nationally known/established across Japan. The Japanese Set-Meal (or Teishoku) includes Rice and Miso Soup and features traditional Japanese meals such as Fish, Chicken, and Pork dishes. These types of meals are very popular with the Locals and give you a good initial taste of old fashion Japanese "home-cooking"! It's quite busy during lunch with locals so you know it's a solid choice!
The food is quite tasty and overall both light but also filling. I got the Chicken Nanban and a small side order of Veggies and Pollock in a Black-Vinegar Sauce. The set meal came with Rice and Miso Soup, and I chose the Barley Rice with Black Sesame seeds. The Chicken was a nice medium fry--it had a delicate crunch that paired nicely with the Nanban sauce, and the chicken itself was quite tender. The 5-Grain Rice was earthy and had a nice flavor dynamic with the dishes, and I think was far tastier than the standard steamed white rice. The Miso Soup was good, but tasted like most Miso. The real sleeper and my favorite dish for Lunch was the Mixed Veggies and Pollock in a Black-Vinegar Sauce. The sauce itself was thick and sweet, but had a twinge of the vinegar that added a nice soft complementary note to all of the veggies. The sauce was excellent to mix in with the rice, and overall it was a very comforting and delicious meal!
They will bring you an English Menu if you ask for it (or look like you'll require it), and the English Menu has all of the same options as the Japanese Menu, except the English Menu is organized more efficiently and straightforwardly. They have quite a few different food options and various dishes to try. They will take Cash and Credit Card. Restaurant itself is nice, has comfy seats, and pretty quick and solid service from the Staff.
A great place to stop in and try some traditional meals without...
Read moreSooo good ! Casual dining, very quick , and high quality menu items with wonderful choices for the health-conscious. I would say this place is traditional Japanese with a few Chinese items. Price is very reasonable for quality and quantity of food. Some of our favorites are black vinegar chicken (very similar to what we Americans know as sweet and sour chicken), their bubbling hot pork cutlet bowls, kaarage, pumpkin croquettes,...I could go on! Make sure to get a stamp card if you frequent this place as it will earn you a...
Read moreA friend from Tokyo recommended this place after I complained about the difficulty in finding traditional Japanese food since so many restaurants have very Americanized dishes in Okinawa. I was definitely not disappointed after trying this. The food was really great, the prices are very reasonable especially considering the area and the reception was also exceptional. Highly...
