Worst experience in Japan at least. The lady is incredibly rude, I have never been insulted so much in a restaurant or coffee shop. Summary: The nice looking coffee and lunch shop charged us 700¥ for instant coffee, messed up our order, while the lady running the shop was the most rude and bitter person we met in Japan. I don’t think there was any misunderstanding, as the lady speaks english.
Long story: We found the shop by accident, while looking for a bus station. The thunder was approaching and is started to rain so we looked for shelter and found this nice looking coffee and lunch shop. We opened the door and waited a few minutes to be welcomed in. When the lady running the shop arrived we were immediately told we cannot eat lunch because it takes time to prepare the food. This is ok with us as we just wanted to take a coffee. She reluctantly sat us down. I am last in our group of 6, and she got tired of waiting so she shuts the door on me. This is already rude, but we wanted shelter from the rain while waiting for the next bus so we stayed. We ordered coffee to go in case we needed to hurry to catch the bus (~20m after being sat down). Very upset that we ordered coffee to go, we were told in a aggressive way to go wait outside. We got our coffees after 10 minutes hoping it does not rain again before the bus arrives. We got 6 hot black coffees, while there was supposed to be one with sugar and one cold. The coffees were disgusting and at the bottom of our cups we found these clumps of coffee powder. We are sure it was instant coffee. Worst experience of our trip in Japan, while we had our best just the day before in...
Read moreI LOVED this restaurant! I was looking for some matcha drinks/dessert before I headed to the Haha-no-Shirataki waterfall. I decided to come here because of all the great reviews. I ended up staying for the food/experience since traditional, homestyle, vegan Japanese food is hard to come by in this area.
I was the only one there as they had recently opened for the day and was greeted by the lovely and warm owner. I felt like I was a guest in someone’s home and it made me feel like a home away from home. Once I got my food, the owner and I got to chatting away about her story in getting to run the restaurant. It was really cool to connect in this way over a beautiful home made meal, but skillfully made in this gorgeous, classic, Japanese home.
Each item in the bento box was thoughtfully and carefully made. A lot of love went into the meal and you could taste it!
The experience had it all, amazing food, great conversation with the owner and the vibes of the space really made it so special. It’s easily been the best dining experience I’ve had thus far in Japan. It’s also a reminder that modernity can never outweigh true connection, a space that’s been around for 200 years (the restaurant) and food made with love from people who care about what they do. This place is a must if you are in the area! Thank you so much T, I hope to come...
Read moreWe absolutely loved this place! The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the house is beautiful!
We don’t eat foods with onion, garlic, any pungent roots, eggs, fish, and meat. So our Airbnb host recommended this place and she called them in advanced to let them know our dietary restrictions and made a reservation for us. This was helpful for their kitchen since they had to prepare in advanced to accommodate us.
The food was absolutely delicious! It was simple, flavorful, and wholesome.
The host explained the meal to us and even chatted with us. After we finished, the owner of the restaurant came out and chatted with us. Both were so friendly and fun to talk to! They spoke English very well too! The host even saw us out and waited until we rode away on our bikes.
The house is such a beautiful, traditional Japanese house owned by a 70 year old woman from the Nakamura family. Seating was in a traditional Japanese style, on the floor and we sat by a window overlooking the garden. It was extremely peaceful and serene. The house has a little shop and they were even hosting stamp making classes.
I could go on and on, but it was probably one of the nicest experiences I had in Japan.
Thank you to the Nakamura House team for...
