Hakata Kaisenyaki Kisui Maru (Hakata Ichibangai Branch): A Breakfast Review
I went for the morning set meal at Hakata Kaisenyaki Kisui Maru (Hakata Ichibangai Branch). I imagine many of you searching right now are looking for the all-you-can-eat mentaiko breakfast set, so I wanted to share my notes.
The restaurant opens at 7:30 AM, but you can probably get a numbered ticket starting around 7:00 AM. This time, I arrived at 7:10 AM on a Sunday and was 10th in line. By 7:30 AM, when I finished eating, there were 15 groups waiting. Since there's nowhere to sit and wait near Hakata Station after getting your ticket, you'll either need to find somewhere to kill time or wait in front of the restaurant.
If you're staying at a business hotel near Hakata Station, it's a good idea to go get a numbered ticket early.
The All-You-Can-Eat Breakfast Set
For every breakfast set, you get all-you-can-eat mentaiko, miso soup, karashi takana (spicy mustard greens), and rice. When you order on the touch panel, you can choose your rice portion: small, regular, or large. You also order refills via the touch panel. Looking around, I saw both men and women getting rice refills, so I didn't hesitate to get a refill myself!
This time, I chose the grilled mackerel set. You can also choose between a whole fish or a half-size portion. The grilled mackerel was wonderfully fatty – a truly satisfying start to the day.
Next time I'm on a business trip to Hakata, I'll definitely be skipping the hotel breakfast and eating here at Hakata Kaisenyaki...

I ordered the Sashimi Teishoku and I was so surprised by the size and volume of Sashimi slices. LOOK AND COMPARE THEM WITH THE MENU PICTURE.
The service was bad too. Even I was waiting with my name registered in the ipad, no body noticed. After being waited for more than 10 mins one person noticed and apologized and let me in.
However they have unique point too. You can have rice, soup, mentaiko and takana for free no volume limited.
Since the quality of the food is good, it is really pity that they are cost cutting by cutting sashimi SO SMALL. And the price is still super expensive. I do recommend that you visit...
Read moreThe first time we went there, it was about 9:30 but they stopped serving breakfast. The next day we arrive before 9:00 and successfully got a ticket for the breakfast. We waited for about 30 minutes. The Mentaiko, miso soup and rice are all unlimited. I personally found the Mentaiko bit too salty but good value for money.
The staff didn’t seem to be able to speak English. When they called out the numbers, it was all in Japanese. We had to use the google translate to understand how our number is pronounced...
