I’m giving this restaurant 2 stars not because of the food, but because of the rude, disrespectful owner. Food was authentic and had good flavour and spice and the service by our waiter was also great, vibe in the restaurant was good and it was relatively clean.
To expand on the experience with the rude owner: I noticed that there’s a sign outside the restaurant saying “halal ok” so I thought before trying the food I would need to ask what specifically is “halal,” since it is not clear on their signage. I also read reviews that they will say it is halal but they don’t have a certificate or any other proof. It’s been difficult to find good halal options in Fukuoka so I was excited to maybe find another option.
When my friend and I sat down, I asked the owner if they are halal, and he very quickly said “yes we halal everything halal don’t worry about it” in a bit of a defensive tone. So I decided to enquire further and politely asked if they maybe have a certificate or if they could show me the packaging. He immediately became more defensive and went on a rant saying “we are more religious than you.” He began to yell at me and say “we have been here for many years many Muslims come to eat here it’s halal. You shouldn’t worry because I think we are more religious than you are.” I feel that was uncalled for since it was a polite, reasonable question. Also, I’ve been to a different Indian restaurant in the past that wasn’t halal, so I was going to order the vegetable curry, but when I made conversation with the owner and told them I’m Muslim, he brought out the frozen chicken that they use in the restaurant and showed me the halal sign.
So this owner’s reaction, yelling at me and disrespecting my religion, was not necessary. Place was empty too, he should’ve been grateful he had a customer. He promptly left and never returned, so we could enjoy our meal in peace. Just because you’re “the oldest Indian restaurant in kyushu,” doesn’t mean you can treat your customers like that. Props to the restaurant staff for their food and service, but I wouldn’t want to give the owner my hard earned yen...
Read moreThis is a little restaurant tucked away on the second floor of a downtown building. We arrived on the dot at 11:00 (that's when they open) to fill our tummy's with a taste of India. They have lunch sets as well as items off the main menu. Talking about a taste of India, there are a hundred different styles of cuisines to choose from that come from India. This restaurant offers north indian food and punjabi food. Tandoors, Naans, Lassi are just some of the favorites that we chose to have for lunch. The food was tasty and delicious. Portions were good too though some might say there was more curry but for a person from India there is never enough of curry ;) It is definitely worth a visit. My favorite was the cottage cheese stuffed Naan, it was fluffy and delicious. My husband loved the Naan with the...
Read moreAn absolute 10/10. If I could give Nanak more than 5 stars, I would. Since coming to Fukuoka, I have craved good Indian food such as that my family would make. With Nanak, I have found it. Not only is the food delicious and authentic, the staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly. I will certainly be back, and highly suggest any other SW Asian people visiting, who wish for a taste of home, to give them a try!
On the spice level, they give you the option to choose your level to accommodate everyone's individual taste. 0-5 are mild to my taste, but still delicious and flavourful. SW Asians should keep this in mind and order a higher level to better match what you would find back home.
Please visit Nanak next time you are in Tenjin, you are guaranteed a...
