This small but famous seafood market is close to our hotel, so we went there for lunch on our 2nd day in Hakata. There are actually a number of restaurants in the market, but there is only one which stands out and have people waiting for hours to get in. We planned to go to the "famous" one 2 days later, so we ventured ourselves and went into this one. It looks like a family run biz and we were asked to go to the 2nd floor, which is rather spacious. Prices are about the same as the others. We had the mentaiko set and the ikura salmon don, both of which come with a small bowl of miso soup or soba noodles.
The fish were fresh but the missus found her ikura to be salty. The mentaiko was fresh enough but seemed to have been kept a tad too long. Portion was good though.
