Happen to chance upon this quaint little dry noodle store about 10-12 minute walk from the Hiroshima Station.
When i entered i was greeted by a warm Japanese man who spoke decent english, he was working by himself so he had some difficulty preparing all the bowls of noodles quickly, but it wasn't more than a 10 minute wait.
The store offers 2 types of noodles, "mazemen" which is his signature dry noodles, and "tantanmen" being their regular noodles with a thick sauce.
He has 4 flavours for "mazemen", and 3 for "tantanmen", you can also adjust the spice levels for the red pepper flavours.
The "tantanmen" truly unique, having a mellow yet deep flavour, while the noodle texture is slightly undercooked, which gives it a good bite, and covered in a rich and creamy sauce.
The "mazemen" covers the noodle in rice crispies, tasting completely different from the "tantanmen" and yet equally amazing, the rice crispy flavour does seep into the sauce, so you'll get a hint of it with every bite, the noodles are also slightly more chewy than usual.
After you finish the "mazemen" you can also order an extra bowl of rice to soak up the sauce and stick to the remaining ingredients to create an extra dish to fill yourself up.
To top it all off, the price is extremely reasonable, and the quality and quantity you get is acceptable for how...
Read moreWow, what a find! The restaurant is a diamond in the rough in the middle of nowhere that serves the best mazemen I’ve had the pleasure of eating.
We spot a hot, hot day on Miyajima Island and really wanted something cold to eat. I found this place on google and I’ve noticed it was rare to find something rated 4.5 or higher that was budget friendly. We knew we had to try it.
The restaurant is your typical small restaurant with my around 18 seats. We were greeted by the friendly chef and lady server who promptly sat us down and provided us English menus. She spoke enough English to help us order.
My family ordered the curry, regular and shrimp flavour and I had the black sesame.
Everyone raved how good theirs was! My black sesame mazemen was absolutely oishi!!! I had a taste of everyone else’s and it was definitely oishi. The bill came to 3800¥ for all 4 of us.
When paying the chef and server thanked us for coming in and asked us where we were from. Believe it or not, but not many restaurants on our 1.5 week trip so far have asked us that. They said to enjoy our trip in Japan as we left the restaurant.
If you’re in the area and want some crazy good mazemen and appreciate warm and friendly smiles, this will...
Read moreThis ramen place has four tables, but boy the food it serves at those tables is good. It's not a five star experience. You won't have someone offering to salt your food and serve you champagne, but remember: you're having ramen, the staple diet of broke college students everywhere. With that saif. So, this is about as good as ramen experiences get, and that's definitely a compliment.
The food is great. Not 'great for ramen'. It's actually great, with a good balance of meat to noodles to broth, and even then you'll want to slurp up all the remaining broth. You can. Slurping noises are fine in this culture, and it was quiet despite the fact we were there at what was supposed to be a mealtime, so don't worry about annoying anyone.
No English menu, but that doesn't matter; the staff will understand if you point and indicate the spiciness level with your fingers (I reccomend a spiciness of 2). Good pricing too, on par (maybe a bit cheaper) than other...
