On my recent trip to Hiroshima, I had the pleasure of dining at Nagataya not once, but twice, and each visit left me in awe of the culinary craftsmanship displayed by the chefs. Okonomiyaki, often hailed as the soul food of Hiroshima, is elevated to new heights at Nagataya.
From the moment you take your seat, the tantalizing aroma of sizzling batter and savory toppings fills the air, whetting your appetite for what's to come. The menu boasts an impressive selection of Okonomiyaki variations, each more tempting than the last. Whether you prefer the classic Hiroshima-style with layers of noodles, cabbage, and pork, or crave a modern twist with seafood or vegetarian options, Nagataya caters to every preference with finesse.
During my visits, I had the pleasure of sampling several Okonomiyaki creations, each prepared with precision and served with a side of flair. The Okonomiyaki at Nagataya is not merely a dish; it's a culinary journey that tantalizes the taste buds and delights the senses. The careful balance of ingredients, the mastery of griddling techniques, and the artful presentation are a testament to Nagataya's commitment to culinary excellence.
But Nagataya offers more than just Okonomiyaki; it offers an experience steeped in tradition and hospitality. The warm and welcoming ambiance, coupled with attentive service, creates an atmosphere where diners feel like honored guests in a friend's home.
As I reflect on my time in Hiroshima, it is the memories of indulging in Nagataya's Okonomiyaki that linger most vividly in my mind. It is a testament to the culinary prowess and dedication to perfection that define this remarkable establishment.
For anyone seeking an authentic taste of Hiroshima's culinary heritage, Nagataya is an absolute must-visit. Prepare to be transported on a gastronomic journey unlike any other, where each bite tells a story of tradition, innovation, and unparalleled flavor. Read moreThis was my first time having okonomiyaki in Japan. I normally don’t like the dish from what I’ve tried in Toronto, so I wasn’t exactly eager to go, but my friends told me it was really good and that Hiroshima okonomiyaki is better than Osaka okonomiyaki, so I decided to give it a try.
The restaurant in particular is located at the end of Hondori, actually next to another okonomiyaki restaurant that receives far fewer customers—maybe because Nagata-ya offers an English menu and the greeter actually speaks English well enough. I did notice on a Sunday night that there were about half/half foreign and Japanese customers.
My group of 6 arrived at 6pm because we knew there would be a long line. They were right, because after we lined up behind two tables, a huge line formed after us. We didn’t have to wait that long—about 15-20 minutes, and the greeter takes your order while you’re in line so your food comes faster. We ordered some cabbage salad and edamame for the table, and both were really salty and delicious.
As for the okonomiyaki itself, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was delicious and totally better than any okonomiyaki I’ve had in Toronto. The cooks prepare the okonomiyaki teppanyaki style (if you sit at the counter), and if you sit at a table the servers bring it freshly made and set it on the mini teppan in the middle of the table so that it stays hot. You then get to cut it apart with your own mini spatula.
I think what I liked most is that the sauce and mayonnaise is self serve, so you get to decide how saucy you want to make it. The overload of sauce is probably what I didn’t like about the Toronto okonomiyakis.
The prices are really justifiable because you are extremely full after. I paid ¥1510 total for the Special okonomiyaki and one side dish.
The only thing that might turn potential customers off is that it is an open kitchen, so you will come out smelling like a fryer, i.e. don’t wear your fanciest clothes, and the space is quite cramped. A group of 6 is probably the maximum you could have...

As my time in Japan was coming to an end, I wanted to have Okonomiyaki one last time, and I’d heard that Hiroshima is known for this iconic dish.
I found a popular spot with great reviews and decided to check it out. When I arrived, there was a 90-minute wait, but I figured it was worth it, so I joined the line.
And I’m glad I did, the wait was absolutely worth it.
The service was fantastic as always. They took our order while we were outside, which saved time once we got in, and even asked if we preferred a booth or the bar (where you can watch it being cooked in front of you). I opted for the booth for a more personal experience.
I can't remember the exact name of the dish I ordered, but it was the recommended one with shrimp, squid, crispy chips, raw egg, and I added cheese. My partner chose the version with corn. I loved that it also came with noodles, and you could choose between two types.
The Okonomiyaki was bursting with flavor, made with fresh ingredients, and every bite was a delight. Portions are generous, so I’d skip any extras or appetizers.
The cold beer was the perfect pairing, and the relaxed atmosphere was a great touch.
I would definitely go back—this place is worth the wait!
