My wife and I were in Hiroshima on a bus tour and looking for a place to eat when we stumbled on to Mantonki Hiroshimamotomachi Kuredo (Wan Zhu Ji on the menu). It’s a fun and lively restaurant with a really endearing, pig art theme, such as wall murals with six pigs riding a bicycle (you don’t see that everyday!). The walls are also painted with displays of their food, as well, as a display of all of their food dishes outside. They just celebrated their 30th anniversary, so you know that they are legit.
We had the mapu tofu, which I actually make at home (I make the Japanese version) and it’s a family comfort food tradition. Unfortunately, although very tasty, it was way too hot for us and we like spice! We only ate a quarter of it, as it required a lot of rice to be able to eat it. A bowl of noodles probably would have been a better choice to eat it with, but the Chinese version is supposed to be very spicy.
My wife and I also had the dumplings, which were absolutely killer and the reason to go to Wan Zhu Ji! They were huge pork dumplings, moist and delicious and the ideal dumpling/gyoza. We also had the crispy ones with spicy mayo and they were killer too.
The service was friendly and helpful and the food came fast in a busy restaurant. We actually bumped into more of our fellow travellers who found it before us and they loved it too. A great Chinese restaurant in Hiroshima to eat delicious...
Read moreWe went here only because the kids spotted some dim sum items they liked in the food displays, and there was a bit of a queue of locals - usually a good sign. In this case, once the food arrived, the queue became more of a mystery.
The food is not bad, but certainly not great, and especially at the price. Lunch for 2 adults, 2 kids (admittedly we had a la carte items with 3 nice Calpis float drinks) was just over £50.
Prawns in chilli sauce were a bit gloopy. Spicy chicken fried rice went down well with my son, as did beef sauce with crispy noodles with my daughter.
Advice would be to stick to the limited selection of lunch sets - they seem like better value.
We wouldn’t come back here, or recommend...
