In my opinion, this museum has a unique design. The building is bright and square. The entrance to the museum was through the gift shop. I purchased my ticket and was directed to visit two buildings. As I walked to the first building, I noticed the beautiful grounds and the cafe. The architecture and landscaping were amazing. The first building I entered was circular. There were beautiful pieces on the walls and individual rooms for the rest of the art. This museum is so beautifully laid out that you don't have to worry about missing anything. I saw works by Van Gogh, Renoir, Monet, Manet, Picasso, Berthe Morisot, Cezanne, Degas, and so many more. There was an information card that contained Japanese and English. The gallery wasn't crowded. It was very nice and I really enjoyed it. The next gallery had an exhibition on Alfons Mucha. It was also beautifully laid out. I had not heard of this artist before. I really...

I've never seen such an extensive collection of impressionist paintings...All by the classics. Still fangirling that I saw a Van Gogh. I guess it's been a quick minute since I've been to New York to see their collection...so I'm sure I've seen some there now that I think about it.

If you have any liking for impressionist art, this is a place for you to check out. 600 yen for entry and four galleries.

I read some reviews saying it was confusing about pictures, and I agree. There are some signs at the entry to the gallery that no pictures are allowed...but then there is one sign that says only those that say no pictures can have no pictures...very confusing. And then the pamphlet is very confusing as well...I suggest you ask upon entry whether you can take photos.

Obviously you definitely shouldn't be taking flash photography, but I don't know about...

Relatively expensive entry fee compared to other Japanese museums (about $10 USD) but that isn’t really a factor for me.

The collection is a bit small (five separate galleries with 15 or so pieces in each) and includes mostly art from the 20th century. The work in the special exhibition (a sixth gallery) looked fun but it was all in Japanese so it was strictly a visual experience, which I suppose is what we’re after. The artist is obviously very playful with his work and it showed. I think the artist has a regional following based on some of the characters but again, all in Japanese so I’m just guessing based on what I observed.

Upside is getting a discount coupon for the adjacent cafe so if nothing else, you can get some coffee...

Spent about two hours here.. the museum itself isn't so large but they have quite a few paintings. Although none of the informative posters are written in English, I liked that the museum guide available on your phone gives you information about each piece of art and the artists themselves (in English or Japanese). The museum is also laid out in an extremely user-friendly manner, with lots of signs and arrows. Helped me feel a lot less dumb since I wasn't left wandering around 😅 The museum gift shop also had a lot of cool products, especially the little flip books. They also have a lot of cat-themed items for some reason?

It's been a museum year for us: Venice, NYC, Berlin, Kyoto, Nagasaki, Detroit, and unusual ones such as the Fragrance Museum in Beppu. This museum was magnificent. Small, so you don't get museum fatigue, but what a stunning collection of famous artists. The curation is remarkable. The main floor features the artists you know. The lower floor was a derp dive into a lesser known artist, chronicling his career as you view each piece. Easily on par with the best museums we've visited.
