Omicho Market in Kanazawa is a seafood lover’s dream and one of the best local markets I visited during my time in Japan. It’s not just a tourist attraction — it’s a working market where locals come for daily shopping, which gives it a very authentic feel. The moment you enter, you’re hit with the salty scent of fresh seafood and the lively sounds of vendors calling out their specials.
This market is especially famous for its kaisen-don — seafood rice bowls — and it totally lives up to the hype. I had a bowl topped with tuna, salmon, scallop, uni (sea urchin), and ikura (salmon roe), and everything was incredibly fresh and flavorful. There are lots of small restaurants and counters where you can eat right after buying. Some places have lines, but they move quickly.
Aside from seafood, the market also sells fruits, vegetables, pickles, sweets, and some kitchen goods. I found huge, perfectly ripe strawberries and locally grown pears that were super sweet. Prices range from cheap snacks to high-end ingredients, so there’s something for every budget.
Omicho Market is clean, organized, and not too overwhelming. It’s a perfect stop for lunch, and a great way to experience Kanazawa’s food culture firsthand. I highly recommend it — just be sure to...

Read more// 22 March 2024 The challenge I encountered is that I couldn't locate the name of the eatery I visited in Japan because it's not in English. Here's the spot where we had dinner in the market, close to one of the exits. It's popular among locals, with a Japanese-only menu and cash-only payment.
There are several similar eateries in the market offering similar food. While there was a queue in the early evening, when we returned around 7pm, there was no line, and we were seated right away.
The miso soup is delicious, and I noticed a repeated note in various restaurants cautioning about bones in the miso soup, advising caution while consuming it.
//Edited on 23 March 2024 Bustling on this Saturday morning, attracting both locals and tourists with its wide variety of stalls selling everything from vegetables and fruits to meat and seafood.
