This cafe is a very short walk from the Golden Gate Temple; not on the Main Street where all the tourists are. First support this little local business who is owned by the sweetest and kindest couple. They served pound cake with black beans and a really light castella cake which is surprising as it is usually a more dense Japanese cake. The atmosphere was wonderful. It is a hole in the wall, away from the hustle and bustle. If you prefer some quietness or just to read a book with a little afternoon tea, Bean’s Goody is perfect. Also the lady owner speaks good English despite never been to an English speaking country, she told us about some Japanese art and encouraged us to visit a place in Nishiki to see the floral art. She is amazing! A delightful little cafe next to a hyper tourist destination.

Foreigner Review: If you’re in Kyoto and near the Golden Temple… PLEASE come here. The older woman who owns this restaurant, serves and cooks everything so deliciously! We frequented this place, specifically because there are many vegetarian options here (my gf is vegetarian). The woman is so sweet, and she does her best to make conversation and understand you, if you don’t speak Japanese. We’ve cleared our plates completely, multiple times! Everything is also presented aesthetically pleasing as well. It’s a good experience. You can tell she cooks from the heart. I envy her children who got to have this for bento everyday!

When you think about travelling, at least for me, it’s all about the little people you meet along the way. These people have so much passion and joy. This is one of those places. I stopped by on a whim based on the reviews and it’s proximity to Kinkakuji, and I must say it was well worth the visit. I ordered the black soy bean coffee and the matcha pound cake. Both were sublime, I wanted the whole loaf of cake. But what stood out though was the actual owner who made every effort to interact with us and welcome us into her home. She is a true star and gem.
