Slightly more expensive, but delightful Italian close by Kyoto Ritz and Imperial Palace.
Small place, run by single very friendly chef, who expertly whips out flavors that are fulfilling in a homey Italian way, but still carry some high cuisine twist. I tried fried veggies with pork, buttery but light, saving the flavors, and followed with pasta with a sauce of mushrooms and liver. Both are delicious to the point of making you ravenous. For desert enjoyed sweet wine gelato which was surprisingly complex on the palette.
Wine is plentiful as well, pleasant surprise being that they serve several choices of glass wine - a bit of a rarity in Japan.
