Kyoto, Japan Part 2 | Kansai Food Guide (with Restaurant Names)

Anji is a seafood-focused izakaya with a menu of small plates and grilled seafood great for sharing and pairing with drinks! Ordering was streamlined and done via QR code, and the service was attentive and on point. We started with the Obanzai plate, which came with three local vegetable dishes including radish, eggplant, and mushrooms/carrots/scallions. We also had two other Kyoto specialties: boiled tofu, a pot of soft tofu cubes with Napa cabbage and other vegetables cooked on a hot plate at the table; and Namahu Dengaku, or skewers of chewy baked wheat gluten topped with miso sauce. For our seafood selection, we had the whole grilled hokke, a white fish with firm, slightly oily flesh. The fish had a salty flavor and even the thin, crunchy grilled bones were edible. One of their specialty items was the Sumiyaki, or charcoal barbecued seafood. We got a mixed plate of shrimp, scallop, squid, dried squid, and jakoten (a grey fish cake), and every item was freshly grilled right at our table. But my favorite fish of all was the Boiled Sea Bream (the house specialty dish), made of a sea bream head and two collar pieces boiled in a sticky, sweet, and salty dark sauce. The meat in the collar was tender, fatty, and flavorful, such that you didn’t even need the sauce and could savor it all on its own! Overall, the dishes here were all fresh and delicious, and the value was amazing for the quality.

Anji is a seafood-focused izakaya that never disappoints! With a menu full of small plates and expertly grilled seafood, it’s the perfect spot for sharing and pairing with drinks. Ordering is done through a QR code, making the experience efficient and hassle-free, while the attentive service ensures everything runs smoothly. The staff is quick, friendly, and always on point. This has become our go-to place whenever we’re in Kyoto, and for good reason. If you’re looking for delicious seafood, and great drinks. Anji is the place to be!

Fantastic seafood based izakaya with a good selection of dishes. We ordered the three piece sashimi, half mackerel, deep fried tuna pieces and the boiled tofu, and it was PLENTY! It was all delicious and reasonably priced, the fried tuna pieces being a personal favourite and something I've never quite tasted elsewhere in Japan. Great service too, friendly staff who helped with the menu. It's all done via QR code and your phone should translate the menu on the fly, but they also have paper English menus with arguably better translations. Highly...
