Outstanding CP. You really get a lot of seasonal food for ¥15,000. I want to highlight the chef’s attention to vegetables, such as the carrot, seri, and fukinoto, which were all of excellent quality (the fukinoto especially). You also will get plenty of luxurious ingredients in the course, such as fugu shirako, an especially large hata, and the perfect cut of meji maguro. Not to mention an incredible quantity of eel. The eel itself is extremely crispy. The way the fats were rendered give the skin a thick-bodied and audible crunch. My personal preference is for a more delicate crisp like Yamasei in Matsumoto, but I can see fans of this style too! My only nitpick was that the eel had a slightly muddy smell, which distracted from the shirayaki. But honestly at this price point it’s hard to have a genuine complaint. Both the chef and the proprietress made an effort to chat despite my rather bad Japanese 😅, which I really appreciate. The restaurant is less than a year old, and I look forward to the cuisine becoming more refined (I feel like the simmered dishes could use a more delicate hand on the heat, and the yuzu seasoning on the ankimo was a tad aggressive which distracted from its natural sweetness). In any case, the generosity of ingredients at this price point really reflects their love of food that they serve their guests, and for that reason, I’d revisit if I have the chance.

First time having a fine dining of UNAGI (eel) in Japan. Food: I’d say Excellent! Can distinguish easily that the raw material of Unagi used is of high quality. I love the appetiser, the soup and especially the main dish - grilled Unagi……. “Manzoku” which means “with great satisfaction!” The chef (thought to be the owner) and the lady staff are all good. They are nice, very helpful and they explained every single dish about its ingredients, cooking method, etc….. Highly highly recommended for everyone looking for a decent, value-for-money restaurant famous for Unagi. Will definitely go there again when we come to Kyoto next time.

We visited the restaurant earlier in June. The food was awesome, undoubtedly top 3 unagi in Kyoto, probably my personal favorite so far. However, there was a problem that the lady staff was coughing badly during our meal. The day after visiting the restaurant, I started to feel uncomfortable with my throat, and was later diagnosed with corona positive two days later. I'm not 100% sure if I was infected in the restaurant, but that's the only time in that trip that someone coughed in front of me (though she was coughing behind a mask). All in all, a great unagi restaurant, but I'm not sure if will visit again...

Booking the eel lunch was a last-minute decision. A perfect five-star Google rating. It felt heavy, like it had something to prove. Still, the review stuck with me: “This eel will move you.” It wasn’t flashy. It didn’t need to be.

I arrived ten minutes late, rushing past the wooden door. The smell of smoke greeted me, soft and clean. The restaurant was small. Quiet. No decorations, no distractions. Just calm light and the sound of people eating without speaking much. It was a place for the food to do the talking.

The eel came out. It glistened on the plate, golden and crisp. A quiet kind of beautiful. Beside it sat small bowls of sansho and black pepper. No explanation, just there. I picked up a piece. The skin cracked gently, and the meat inside melted like it was meant to. Smoky, rich, but not too much. Sansho added something sharp, bright, almost playful. The black pepper was different. It was bold and addictive, the kind of taste that stayed with you and made you want more. It wasn’t just seasoning. It was part of the story.

Halfway through, they brought out a whole eel with seaweed, scallions, and wasabi. They told me to layer it, so I did. A little seaweed, a sprinkle of scallions, just enough wasabi. The bite was fresh, clean, and sharp in a way that made the richness of the eel stand out even more. Each piece felt like it was revealing something new, something I hadn’t noticed before.

At the end, they brought dashi. I poured it over the last piece of eel. The skin softened, the broth soaked in, and it all came together—simple and complete. I ate it with rice, and it felt like finishing a book that didn’t waste a single word.

I left knowing why this place had five stars. It wasn’t about the decoration or the service. It was about the food, and how it made everything else feel quiet and right. If you’re near Kyoto, or even if you’re not, you should find a way here. It’s worth the trip. It’s...
