Ippudo - Shijo Karasuma — Restaurant in Kyoto

This joint can be hard to find as it is nestled along a busy and colorful street with a basement entrance. Look for a large plain wooden carved signage; besides Hands-DIY and across Daimaru shopping mall. Service crew is wonderfully attentive, even remembering the orders of regular customers. Ippudo are Hakata style ramen with wholesome taste & nice flavors. You can customize your portions, spiciness or add toppings. Hot char (non refillable tea) is free. My order was expected: lava hot & spicy but still rich non MSG broth. Wheat noodles are natural with no aftertaste and soft. If your tummy allows, can also end meal with few yummy hot plate braised gyoza and deserts too or continue your shopping...

WARNING! The first time I went here I ordered the extra spicy and it was very mild (saying this as someone who eats nuclear ramen and enjoys the taste and slight burn). Today I went here again and it felt like they were trying to straight up murder me with the spice. I was coughing and a tear fell out of my eye. Because I was sat in front of the chefs it seemed like they were laughing at me as my soul was burning from the spice. My gf had to scoop out all of the spicy oil as it was unbearable. I didn't want to seem like I was a loser so I ate all the food anyways and made sure to say thank you to the chef. Be warned the extra spicy is NO JOKE .These dudes...

I don't usually write reviews, but I was quite happy when I visited the store today. My boyfriend and I had just arrived in Kyoto today from the UK, so we were a little hesitant because we do not speak Japanese, but surprisingly, we were happy to see a British staff worker working there. He was very accommodating and helped with any questions we had. It is nice to see that such a store is willing to hire foreigners, as it makes for a comfortable environment when you do not speak the language.
