I have heard of 文字焼き(Monjayaki), 大阪焼き(Osaka Yaki), but it was my first time to have actually tried Okonomiyaki in Japan. My past experience to eat Osaka yaki was in Shanghai’s Japanese restaurants. I liked the vibe of this teppanyaki restaurant, and especially appreciated how friendly the staff was to me and my mom in busy hours on a day during Japan’s golden week.
They got a page on the menu that listed out vegetarian-specific dishes, which really made it easier for me and mom to pick out instead of checking one by one with the waitress. Along the table was a long iron plate where the chef would put the fried food to keep it heated subsequently so that we could still have warm food when we were eating some of it. Remember to flip the food (okonomiyaki or fried noodles) from time to time to prevent it from being overheated on one side.
I want to extend my gratitude to the young lady waiting our table in the corner in front of the counter on the night of April 29, Monday, 2024. She had been so patient and kind to me (who speak crappy Japanese), patiently trying to use simple Japanese to explain some dish names for me. She’s hospitable to take care of us by adding water timely and very responsive.
The food of course was amazing! My mom and I were surprised and pleased with every dish served to us. Thank you, Chef!

Read moreThis is a very popular okonomiyaki (a sort of Japanese savory omelette with noodles) restaurant near the Gojozaka bus stop, at the foot of the road to Kiyomizu shrine. While they also serve yakisoba (fried noodles) and other teppan dishes, okonomiyaki is definitely their main business. On the plus side, it's conveniently located, their set menu is a good bargain for two or three diners, and they include a hefty portion of shrimp, pork, and squid in their dishes. On the minus side, most of the clientele seems to be tourists -- for my visit, it was packed with Chinese tourists and a few Americans, and the cooks and servers may well have been the only Japanese people in...
Read moreI went here several times during my trip to Kyoto and had a great time in this restaraunt. The food here is not necessary the best I've had in Japan but nevertheless it was delicious and filling, and I especially enjoyed a lot of the desserts. There is an English menu availible and the staff seemed to understand most things. The prices are a little below average compared to Kyoto in general which is good because I found restaraunts in Kyoto to be quite expensive compared to other cities in Japan. The portion sizes served are also decent so you can come away full. I really reccomended this place, it has good food, a good vibe and...
