This was hands down the worst food experience I’ve had in Kyoto. Out of curiosity, we tried the matcha beer and matcha shochu—neither had any real matcha flavor. The shochu was especially bad, oddly diluted with water and thoroughly unpleasant.
To make matters worse, the service was painfully slow. We were the only customers, yet it still took over 10 minutes to serve drinks that essentially involved pouring matcha into beer and shochu. Truly baffling.
This visit was a good reminder: avoid eating in Ninenzaka. Most spots in the area seem designed purely for tourists, offering overpriced, low-quality food and drink with little authenticity. A disappointing and frustrating...
