Manaia Coffee and Things is a beautifully bright café nestled along a small side street of the Kamigyo Ward of Kyoto. The abundance of natural light lighting up the whole shop really gives it a happy mood-boosting vibe.
The owners, Jun-san and his wife, are absolutely wonderful people -- they are great to talk to. A big focus in their shop is sustainability. They donate all their used coffee grounds to local farms. Along with being wonderful people, they serve up some of the best coffee and homemade goods in the area. Their homemade granola is top notch!
If you like a good Americano -- either iced or hot -- the Long Black is a fantastic choice. It's my favorite! My wife really gravitates to their Latte, hot, with oat milk -- she swears by it.
Also, if you're looking for something a little bit more substantial to hold you over, their egg and veggie sandwich is insanely delicious! As someone who know their egg salad sandwiches VERY well, I can tell you with confidence, this is one of the best egg salad sandwiches around.
I highly recommend paying them a visit when you're in or near the...
Read moreManaia Coffee & Things was recommended to us by a coffee roaster and shop owner that we met while we were visiting Nara city. This shop wasn't very close to our hotel. However, as we were coming back from a day trip that was far away anyways, we decided it was worth adding this shop as a waypoint towards our hotel. We had been hiking the beautiful Mt. Hiei all morning in the rain, so we were desperately hoping for a good experience. The owner was so friendly and gentle with us. He treated us to one of the best cups of coffee we've had so far in Japan -- he was extremely passionate and excited for us to try their 3 year anniversary Kenya roast. This cup of coffee turned what was already a great day into something even more special. We hope that the owner has a great future ahead of him in the coffee industry. It's truly inspiring how good the coffee scene is in Japan, and especially from within the...
Read moreMy partner and I went to this gorgeous little cafe for a coffee, but were so happy to discover that they have vegan options on the menu so also ended up enjoying a delicious lunch there too! The staff were so welcoming and friendly! We had a lovely chat about New Zealand as I recognized that there were some inspirations from the country there, even in the name of the coffee shop itself. Very cute size cafe with an intimate and personal feel. Look forward to coming back when I am next visiting Kyoto! Everything is made from scratch with love. The owners speak amazing English and the only ask is that everyone in the group at least buys a drink, which is totally fair for the small space to respect them as a business.
