Positives : the food is pretty good. Everything is made by one chef in an open kitchen and can be a nice experience for people who love seeing the process. While I’m a little less enamored, I did appreciate being able to see everything happening. While I think the food selection was relatively average, the wagyu sandwich was not bad, the oysters in olive oil were delicious, and the pork steak was cooked fine. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Negatives: I’ve been to many places in Japan, and I have to say, this is the first place I’ve ever been to which charged me for water, and had a table/service charge (600JPY, which includes a cream onion soup). However, when we asked for more water, we were also charged another 600JPY. In the sweltering heat of Japanese Kyoto summers, most places offer iced water free of charge, and sitting in front of an open kitchen with heat after long walks feels mildly predatory. It is explained very clearly to you when you walk in that there is a cover charge, but it’s shocking to me that there isn’t an option for tap/free water. I think the restaurant should consider offering alternatives and being more transparent about charging for extra water as well. I could get 6 litres of water from the konbini across the street for the same price, at least give me a choice. I also think for the prices of the food, just a Wagyu sandwich for 7200JPY is a little high. For the same price, I could get a 3 course meal in the same area which includes a beef course, with similar quality beef. I was happy to try it, but I don’t think it was worth the money considering 10,000 could get me a full seafood course meal at a more well known named restaurant. Overall, I enjoyed my visit but felt it was a little too geared towards tourists looking for a novel experience. I think it’s lovely to be able to support a smaller business and an owner chef who you’re able to interact with, but I think the prices are just a bit too high for me to want to return. (Parking: I also had to pay for a paid parking lot, so that was...
Read moreThis restaurant is phenomenal..I've been lucky enough to eat at many wonderful restaurants in my life, many including Michelin restaurants. But Muni was by far the best. Unfortunately we discovered it with only two days left in Kyoto but we did eat at Muni both days. If I was staying longer, I would go back again. We had various dishes including waygu, carpaccio, 🦆, salads, shrimp dishes, but honestly everything in the menu is great. Everyone we talked to was enjoying their food. This is a must go, when in Kyoto. The restaurant is in a wonderful location. Additionally and most importantly the chef is wonderful. He is very kind but so talented. When we were outside his restaurant the first night, he took the time to come outside and greet us. The chef is so talented, so kind, honestly he is like a machine its so impressive .On the second day we visited for lunch, he was taking everyone's orders, greeting, taking payments , seating everyone, cleaning , and most importantly making the most wonderful food. I have no idea how he was able to keep track of so many things at the same time. He was able to do the job of about 4 people by himself and still make this amazing food and everyone got their food quickly. We will absolutely visit again next time in Kyoto. When you go, try to sit at the bar, watching the chef work is a...
Read moreBeing extremely tired after our long day of visiting Kyoto and also frustrated looking for places to eat at Gion, we gave up and told ourselves that we should just walk into any nearby restaurants and spontaneously stumbled upon this place. Have a quick look at the reviews and also menu, we walk right in immediately, and I'm so glad we did.
The chef was extremely polite and accommodating. We know that these place are full of tourist and many restaurants are full and some restaurants do not welcome tourists as much, but this place was just as great as what Japan portrays to the rest of the world. The chef speaks good English but is not much of a person with too many words. He kept his professionalism and started working on our dishes once we place our order.
We ordered the wagyu sandwich and omurice Both was extremely delicious and need not much explanation. It's a simple dish that was cooked perfectly. The place is quiet, but patrons soon came in as the night sets in.
Me and my wife really enjoyed the place and was very delighted by the food, service and...
