Goodness gracious… what a performance.
Wagyu Sukiyaki Kyoto Chikarayama Shijo Kawaramachi Store is not merely a restaurant—it is a sanctuary of flavor, an opera of perfectly marbled beef and exceptional hospitality. This was not a meal. No, this was theatrical dining—where every bite was a crescendo, every detail tuned to perfection.
The moment you step in, you’re greeted by a warm, refined atmosphere—part traditional, part modern, all elegance. But the spotlight, make no mistake, belongs to the wagyu. Each slice arrives like silk: marbled, tender, divine. Simmered tableside in a gently sweet sukiyaki broth, paired with fresh vegetables and a poached egg that glistens like polished pearl—it’s a masterclass in harmony. The flavor? A 100-piece orchestra. No note too sharp, no ingredient too bold. Just balance. Just beauty.
And then—Sawa.
Our server, our guide, our comedic conductor. With charm, grace, and razor-sharp humor, she elevated the experience to something unforgettable. She didn’t just serve the meal; she performed it. She walked us through the ingredients with care and joy, and when the food arrived, she even showed us a trick: flip your iPhone upside down for a better angle—of course! Suddenly, our food photos sang like the beef itself.
Sawa turned a luxurious dinner into a memory we’ll carry forever.
In the end, you may ask, “Was it worth it?” A thousand times yes. This wasn’t just 10x the flavor of an ordinary meal. This was 15x the pleasure.

Read moreVisited this place for lunch - after reading the great reviews on Google. Decided to have the lunch set - bento with wagyu and oysters + full wagyu one. It was truly fantastic - great quality meat and oysters prepared before your eyes. Made for a very satisfying lunch. All we wanted was to really take our time to savour every bite. Was also happy to have tried the Yamazaki 12 highball.
During the lunch, we were enticed by the next table’s shabu shabu. Since the other guests told us it was really good, we decided we would make a second trip back on the same day for dinner. That was the right decision as the shabu shabu was also truly excellent - meat was of premium quality, broth was delicious. Ordered sake - good stuff. Experience of sitting on the third floor (classic style with mats on the floor) was fun. The staff were extremely friendly and taught us about the food we were eating. When we left, they all came downstairs to give us a big send off which made our experience of Kyoto complete. Only regret was trying this place only on our last day in Kyoto, as we could not return for more. Understood that the first floor was for tonkatsu - would definitely return to try that if...
Read moreFood is amazing here! Sukiyaki is a type of hotpot using sweet soup base (sugar & soy sauce) and it is original in Kyoto!
We tried to walk in but it was fully booked, so the second time we did make a reservation. This restaurant is always packed so please make sure you reserve before coming.
Each person (adult) will have to order one set. Each set includes sashimi & beef tofu appetizer, sukiyaki (dice beef) and sukiyaki (slice beef), and tea & dessert.
We tried No. 2 (力山)& 3 (富士) & 4 (嵐山) and you can definitely taste the difference!
Our fave is No. 2 (力山) as it has the perfect balance of fat and meat! It just melts in your mouth without feeling too greasy. No. 3(富士) has the most fat - tastes good for the first bite but you will soon feel a bit too greasy afterwards. And No. 4 嵐山 is perfect for slice meat but too chewy for dice beef.
The serve is pretty good here! They have both 2 & 3 floor. I’d recommend seating on the 2nd floor and the third floor is tatami (榻榻米) which is not too comfy for sitting long.
Overall would recommend this place for people who’d love to try sukiyaki or love...
