.A unique experience you should definitely try, once. ジャジャ麺 (jajamen) here is delicious albeit bland. The MVP is the noodles which are perfectly soft and incredibly satisfying to chew, as well have a lingering flavor that is faint yet fulfilling. Everything else, including the condiments, are here to aid that experience. If you like noodles in general, you'll likely enjoy it here.
The place was packed when I came for lunch, but was in with my friend after about 5 minutes. Definitely a hot spot for Japanese residents as well. They have an English menu and accommodate other languages as well. The space was slightly cramped, but that's not unusual for hot restaurants in Japan.
Noodles 5/5: although plain, the flavor is there and the texture sublime. That's why you're here, the rest is on top
Toppings 3/5: because the noodles are bland, most noodle dishes counteract with broth or strong soy sauce or dipping sauce like with Soba. Jajamen doesn't afford the strong flavors and even with karamiso (chili pepper miso) and other added flavors like vinegar, soy sauce, the flavors were sub-par. But still delicious of course, the noodles carry the flavors through.
Soup 2/5: After eating the majority of your noodles you can do chitantan, or basically just adding raw egg to a few leftover noodles and then some broth that Cooks the egg a little. This breakdown might be pleasurable to some, but it just diluted the flavors I enjoyed initially. Feel free to ask for the soup, but enjoy the experience beforehand.
Overall, try it once, it's delicious enough and the noodles are supreme. But I at least won't be revisiting anytime soon.
*caution: don't add too much Karamiso (chili miso) like my friend did, you...
Read moreSaw that there was a wait around 9:30am, came back around 10:30 and there were a few empty seats so I was seated immediately.
As a foreigner I made every mistake in the book before ordering like using a cleaning towel that was on the table to wipe my hands and not knowing which pamphlet was the actual menu. But the hostess was extremely patient with me and explained everything.
The noodles themselves were a refreshing miso udon-like noodle with cucumbers and onion. They also encourage you to add various seasonings like chili oil or soy sauce to make the flavor to your liking. At the end you add a raw egg with some leftover noodles and then the chef will add soup to make it a noodle soup (and you can add different seasonings to once again change the flavor). I liked chili oil at the start and soy sauce once the egg and soup were added.
I wouldn’t say this is such an outstanding dish that one should wait a long time for it, but it was definitely good. But I give this place 5 stars for their staff’s friendliness and patience (emphasis...
Read moreThe Jajamen noodles here are fairly overrated, nothing to write home about even if they're the supposed "originators" of this dish in Morioka, they seem to be riding this train for far too long.
What was completely absurd and absolutely terrible customer service is the fact that we waited at least 45 minutes outside in the cold before we were seated, even though there were more than enough empty seats inside.
There was also another 2 patrons that lined up right after us and entered the same time. Whilst they only ordered a minute before us, they managed to get their same dishes served, eaten, and paid before we even got to eat...
To say we were disappointed is an understatement, would have been 2 stars for food if it weren't for the non existant...
